three days ago I was moving things around in my storage room and I got a painful feeling on my pinky finger of my right hand. I had a black hornet or wasp hanging for dear life very tenaciously. Very difficult to get off. The swelling the first day was minimal with stinging pain. Yesterday my whole pinky was swolen and getting red and hard to bend my finger. This morning I am very alarmed to notice that not only is my pinky swolen as much as the skin will allow.....but my palm and adjoining finger is starting to swell. As soon as my doctors office is open (one hour) I will call and see if I can get in for a look see. Anyone ever hear of this happening to someone else? I really don't want to pay for an expensive office visit if benadryl or some over the counter allergy thing will do. Anyone know about these things. Im pretty resigned to the $60.00 office since I had nightmares about loosing my finger and other silly such exagerations. I never had a reaction like this to any insect sting.
wasp bite (hornet)?
ouch! don't let them put you off. hope it's something he can take care of right away!
Yes, the same thing has happened to me -- my hand swelled up until it looked like an oven mit. The time to see the doctor is now, at the beginning stages of this process, so I'm glad that you are going to call the office as soon as it opens -- the doctor will be able to take care of it.
You are obviously quite sensitive to bee and wasp venom, so you might want to keep Benadryl tablets handy -- I take 50mg of Benadryl (usually two tablets, in the over-the-counter formulation) the minute I'm stung, and then drop back to 25mg twice or three times a day for a couple of days. If you should ever notice shortness of breath and/or numbness or tingling in your extremities after a sting, go to the Emergency Room immediately.
Let us know how it goes.
When I receive a sting bite from any bee or wasps; I mix up a soda paste: baking soda with water to make a paste and put it right on the sting. Remove stinger if possible. You can also put on a slice of raw bacon to the sting.
By doing this, it helps draw out the poison.

I get swelling, redness and itching from insect bites of all types. Last evening while weeding I grabbed a big dandylion plant and got stung by a large yellowjacket. I took an over the counter allergy medication right away. Today my finger has minimal swelling, no itching, is normal color and just a bit numb. I'll continue to take allergy meds for a few more days, stings usually last me 10 days to 2 weeks. If you ask a pharmacist there is a product called DiphenhydrAMINE Hydrocloride that is not an over the counter med or a Prescription med, but it is kept behind the counter so you have to ask for it. This is just antihistamine, nothing else. The label says it is for hay fever type symptoms but it works for insect bites and stings. A 100 capsule bottle cost about $4.50.
When I called the doctor's office they told me to take benadryl in a 25 mg dose every six hours. They wanted to know today if my hand was better or worse. Im glad to say that the swelling was down enough so that the skin was not as taught and uncomfortable. It doesn't have that "shiny" look anymore. I have had plenty of stings before but this was the only time I had this kind of reaction. I am going to keep the benadryl handy from now on and use it right if this happens again. Thanks everyone for your advice and well wishes.
sure glad you're alright. Do know though that we're all getting older and things in our systems change..........LOL. I've never been allergic to anything in my life and all of a sudden I have stupid allergies :(
It really does stink........LOL
