We are having a cancer survivor celebration. theme this year is picinic in the park. I am in charge of music. I have been downloading barbershop quartet type music to play in the background while we are eating.
My problem is I need some inspirational music to play while they are handing out the awards. I don't care if it is modern or not.. so far I have wind beneth my wings and hero.
This is a celebration of life, so i need upbeat and celebration type music...any ideas will be a big help.
thanks chris...
i also posted this on the media forum..
need song ideas for cancer celebration...
If I recall, the theme music from Chariots of Fire and Rocky- reflect succes; also " Against all Odds"-the name sticks in my mind-but cannot remember the music-so may want to check that one out.
Don't know if appropriate, but I like "A Time For Us" from the Romeo and Juliette movie.
The Beatles..., Good Day Sunshine:
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE,
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE,
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE.
I NEED TO LAUGH,
AND WHEN THE SUN IS OUT,
I'VE GOT SOMETHING I CAN LAUGH ABOUT.
I FEEL GOOD
IN A SPECIAL WAY,
I'M IN LOVE AND IT'S A SUNNY DAY.
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE,
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE,
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE.
WE TAKE A WALK,
THE SUN IS SHINING DOWN,
BURNS MY FEET AS THEY TOUCH THE GROUND.
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE,
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE,
GOOD DAY SUNSHINE.
Adam.
Oh how wonderful of you to look up music for a festive occasion! I love the Beatles - what a great song Adam; thank you. Anyhoooo - As a 'survivor', I don't have the music, but the lyrics from my favorite "cure" song, and will try to locate the latter for you. I play the CD in my truck all the time with my hubs. Sometimes we even crank it up and dance to it in our gardens - who gives a hoot when you know you're ALIVE (even after an auto accident last week - auto accidents seem so very small)
I really hope you know what a great thing you are doing - even though I'm a rocker from the 80's, this song meant a lot to me during my 'cure' It's a Burl Ives tune from who knows when.
THE DONUT SONG
(B Merrill)
cho: When you walk the streets you'll have no cares
If you walk the lines and not the squares
As you go through life make this your goal
Watch the donut, not the hole.
It's written on the rainbow, in letters made of gold
Written on the rainbow, there's wisdom to behold
My friend the little sparrow flew
Close enough to see
Written on a rainbow is this philosophy.
(Repeat verse)
Little angels wrote it, so folks on earth would know
(Repeat Chorus two times)
I'm off to jolly England where
Bulldogs all wear pants
Off to Pago Pago where alligators dance
My friend the little sparrow will
Take me where he flies
Even to the rainbow to read with my own eyes
(Chorus) (Repeat First Verse)
Forever Young by Joan Baez...Bob Dylan wrote it,but I prefer her version.
My nephew just submitted it for his 8th grade graduation, and it had the teachers in tears.Needless to say,the kids all walked in to that song.
It would also be quite suitable for your gathering too.
I'll go get the words and post them.
Forever Young...Bob Dylan
May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
One of my favorites regardless of the occasion...Hope you like it...get the Joan Baez version...it's the best.

As a 2 time cancer survior how about We Are the Champions by Queen.
If you would like I could Email you a copy I have it in a mp3 format.
Paul
OOOOH ...good one Paul!
Melody, I loved Joan Baez songs. I saw her in the airport recently. Even with her short hair, she still looked the same. Do you have that song on a CD? Dea, I was a fan of Byrl Ives also. I remember every word and the tune to that song too. I had that song on a Byrl Ives album when I was a much younger person. I wonder what ever happened to that album. Probably went to the same place all my others went. Funny but I don't remember getting rid of any of them. Mother probably did that for me! She didn't have the disease of keeping everything like I did and still do.
R Kelly - World's Greatest
I am a mountain
I am a tall tree
Ohhh, I am a swift wind
Sweepin' the country
I am a river
Down in the valley
Ohhh, I am a vision
And I can see clearly
If anybody asks u who I am
Just stand up tall look 'em in the Face and say
I'm that star up in the sky
I'm that mountain peak up high
I made it
I'm the worlds greatest
And I'm that little bit of hope
When my backs against the ropes
I can feel it mmm
I'm the worlds greatest
I am a giant
I am an eagle
I am a lion
Down in the jungle
I am a marchin' band
I am the people
I am a helpin' hand
And I am a hero
If anybody asks u who I am
Just stand up tall look 'em in the Face and say
I'm that star up in the sky
I'm that mountain peak up high
I made it
I'm the worlds greatest
And I'm that little bit of hope
When my backs against the ropes
I can feel it
I'm the worlds greatest

any more ideas...?
I'm surprised no one has suggested "You'll Never Walk Alone". I don't recall all of the words, but I bet Elena has them. And I think "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is a really cute song. There is "Sunny Side of the Street", but again, the words are probably packed into the same deep dark space as most of my memory.
YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
Oscar Hammerstein & Richard Rodgers
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of the lark.
Chorus
Walk on, through the wind,
Walk on, through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone.
You'll never walk alone.
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of the lark.
Walk on, through the wind,
Walk on, through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone.
You'll never walk alone.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone.
You'll never walk alone.
"I'm still Standing" Elton John
"I will survive" -- an old disco song!
"Nothing's gonna stop us now" - Jefferson Starship
Sunny Side of the Street
Grab your coat and get your hat,
Leave your worries on the doorstep.
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street.
Can't you hear the pitter-pat
And that happy tune is your step?
Life can be complete
On the sunny side of the street.
I used to walk in the shade with my blues on parade
But I'm not afraid This rover’s crossed over.
If I never had a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller.
Gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street.
I used to walk in the shade with them blues on parade
Now I'm not afraid. This rover has crossed over.
Now, if I never made one cent
I’ll still be rich as Rockefeller.
There will be gold dust at my feet
On the sunny,
On the sunny, sunny side of the street
Ellen, you are a treasure! Thanks for these happy songs in such a short time.
"Your wish is my command, my lady." I had them on file so it was easy, as you probably guessed.
Oh, please don't forget "We've Only Just Begun" by Karen Carpenter!

Hey Chris,
I'm a surviver, too. Have you ever heard Jackson Browne's "Alive in the World"? It's one of my favorites for any time in life......And this will sound corny, I'm sure, but a really close friend of mine is going through a really tough time and we recently had a support gathering for her. We were singing all these healing songs to her, and all of a sudden someone started singing "My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music". There were 8 women there and it sounded magnificent !! and by the end of the song ALL our spirits were lifted higher. Of course, we had to follow it up with a resounding rendition of "Climb Every Mountain"!! All the best, SW.
Sierrawoman, your post makes me feel good! I have read over and over that doctors say a good support group is a major factor in successful recovery. To think of you and that group of women gathering to encourage a fellow survivor just plain feels good in my head.
