Forgot to smell the Roses

Albany, MO(Zone 5a)

Around 7 last evening a young lady came to my door wanting tomato plants, and as we walked to the greenhouse she became so excited about my gardens and seemed to want to touch and smell everything. After she left I took another walk through the *Estate* (as my Mom called it)and all I saw was work that needed to be done. Weeds that needing pulling, grass that needed mowing AGAIN, more weeds, empty spaces that needed plants, more weeds, plants too large that needed dividing, more weeds,,etc...

I sat down on one of my Mothers garden benches as the twilight fell around me. The insects were buzzing and the fragrance of honeysuckle was strong. Somewhere along the line I've allowed gardening to become work, and have lost that awe of Mother Nature and that peace that made me whole.

This morning I have a different outlook. Soon I will grab my camera and coffee and *tour the estate* again. This time I'm not going to see all the things that need *doing*, but will enjoy all that's been *done*.

I hope everyone who reads this post will take the time to smell the roses... Gardening is joy, with a little work thrown in to keep our hands busy.

thank you mossrose

Thanks, Mossrose. A great reminder, I needed that. To paraphrase a Bible verse and put it in a different context: "the weeds you will always have with you". Maybe I didn't paraphrase it, maybe I hijacked it!

Cute, Mary," the weeds we will always have with us", I gotta keep that always in mind. Yes, MossRose, I thank you too. This time of year is just so incredibly awesome and haunting and pulling us to a higher realm, at least it does me.

Thank you for this. I am one that always sees what needs to be done, and doesn't really take the time to enjoy what has already been done.

I realized this just today, after DH and I had put in a long hard day beginning our landscaping project around our new home. We worked like beavers all day long, and just about dark we quit and sat on the steps and had a beer. We were both silent in our thoughts, then DH said "Wow, we really got a lot done today, and it's starting to take shape." He's one that smells the roses. I was sitting there thinking of all the things that still needed to be done yet.

I need to change the way I look at things. I'm going to go out tomorrow morning with my coffee cup and admire all we accomplished today.

How wonderful of you to remind us!
Bless you :~)

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Right now I needed that reminder. I am so far behind in planting all the plants I foolishly bought when daughter and i were in Oregon. The weather here has been really awful, cold windy days, 33 to 35 degrees at night. Maybe in the morning I can remember to take my cup of coffee and go out and smell the roses!!! Donna

A timely reminder to us of why we planted all those plants in the first place. I too tend to see just the weeds and the work. thanks for the wake up call

Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

This is a great reminder and by my adding my pennies worth it will cause this thread to get called to everyone's attention again...or maybe for the first time!

I don't have a garden but i always take my coffee and visit with my houseplants and hopefully ones that I'll grow on my balcony soon.

That's the best part of the day!

Thank you for this reminder, MossRose. :)

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the reminder. After a weekend of hauling & dumping mulch in my garden, I stopped last night to see an incredible sky of brilliant blue framed by autumn leaves. Sometimes I need to look UP more...

Hi Rett!! It's me!! You know,,,from that other board??!!

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

I have the opposite problem, my yard is usually a big mess but I just ignore the disaster zones and enjoy the pretty spots! If I were home full time, it would be tatally different, but I'm gone 10 hours a day so that's just the way it is right now!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

You have hit the way I have been feeling about our yard on the head. Thank you for your words. The world is a beautiful place, even the garden that needs thinning, trimming, etc.
