On behalf of Plants Database editors (Baa, PoppySue and myself), we're excited that the PDB is back up and running, and we know many of you are glad it's back, too.
We know that several of you have been collecting images and information to add to the PDB, which is wonderful, and we can't wait to see what you've captured to submit!
However, we need everyone's cooperation and restraint: UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, PLEASE LIMIT YOUR DAILY UPLOADING OF NEW PLANTS AND/OR IMAGES TO 5 PER DAY.
This will allow us to do three important things:
1) keep up with the new submissions and make corrections/additions as necessary;
2) make sure everything looks good when the newsletter goes out each night; and
3) ensure the newsletter doesn't become overwhelming to the readers.
For those of you who help us keep an eye on the new images and entries (either through the PDB forum or the newsletter), we're counting on you to alert us to anything that looks out of place. Don't worry about submitting duplicate error reports, (but please expect our responses to be VERY brief!) We'll be working down the queue of reports that were submitted before the PDB went offline, as well as trying to keep up with the new error reports.
Thanks in advance - if you have any questions, just holler :)
Request for PDB submissions
I would love to post pictures of things but I just don't have any of the good information that goes with it as I'm just not that experienced at all, so I've never posted anything :(
*Bump*
I have been collecting lots of stuff, but will have to wait until a rainy day to upload them. *sigh
Bumping this up to the top for the benefit of those who haven't yet read it :) Thanks again for everyone's cooperation - it does make a difference!
I am very depressed that my page is unwell. I won't be adding anything more to it.
Bug_girl, are you referring to the broken links on a few of the images? If so, have you seen Dave's post to this message? http://davesgarden.com/t/383577/
No, I did not see that thread thank you, but the problem is worse then just a few missing photos. When I open the page that called plants I added it will only show the first group of plants, then it has page 2 and 3 listed, but upon clicking on next or page 2 or 3, the first page appears again. This means I can't see the plants on pages 2 or 3. I can still see them under the page called imagines added by Bug Girl. If that could be fixed some how I would really apprecitate it.
Methinks osmeone asked this on a newer thread, but are we still limited to no more than five images per day (and only on PDB,) right?
Buggirl my page is like that too. It just keeps bring up the first page. I just figured it was a glitch Dave hadn't had the chance to fix yet. Maybe he didn't even know about it. It just does that under the plants we have added section.
Yes, it is a problem that Dave is aware of (but I'll remind him again :o) Your images are still there, it's simply a problem that prevents your ability to browse through them.
And yes, the 5/day limit is still in place, and I really appreciate everyone's willingness to stick to it - it makes a big difference in how much time we can spend on the helpdesk when we aren't trying to review a deluge of new images and entries, too.
I thought it was just me. I got the idea, if I began a new page, it might work better? If there are very many plants on a page, it does seem to load more slowly.
Should be fixed now.
dave
Thank you Dave! It looks great, I love the little numbers for every plant, what a nice idea!
Bumping this back up, as some folks have asked if the limit is still in place. The short answer: yes the limit is still in place, and we really appreciate everyone who has been honoring the request.
We're seeing 60-80 new images and 15-20 new plants added each day, which is great. But it is a lot for us to keep up with. (We're also thankful for the error reports that help us spot the partially-loaded, or incorrect images and other information.)
I was wondering myself, because when I saw so many day lilies, then I assumed it was over. But, I am self limited anyway. Just one here and there, never over five in one day.
From what I can tell, many of the images are coming from
non-paying members who dont read the forums, or else from newbies who are not aware.
I agree this perhaps ought to be on the PDB homepage but to be honest Lavanda, it seems 50-50 to me, take a look at the daily submissions.
There should be some way that a new person about to make a submisson should see a note, saying only 5 per day. Or else email mail notification for people signed up to submit plants.
Well, no one indicates they are only going to submit plants when they create a user name. (It's the same signup process whether you want a user name to post to the Watchdog, the PDB, or the DG forums.)
For about 80% of the population, the current process seems to suffice (namely, we keep an eye on activity, and send a messages to those who start submitting a rash of new images and/or plants.) The other 20% are those who indulge in infrequent "posting sprees."
While the current process isn't a perfect solution, it works most of the time, and I would stress that we REALLY do appreciate those who have heeded the request.
The only other option I see is to have Dave set up a queue for all images and entries go into, where they can be reviewed and released a few at at a time. There are some downsides to that idea, too. So for now, we'll just continue to keep an eye on things, send messages, and bump up this message occasionally when it seems a widespread reminder is in order.
Takes me so long to do an entry ~ could never have time to do 5 in one day. I have just saving my pics and double checking the ID; Can always post them this winter when we are stuck inside. No rush. Better to take my time and do it correctly.
arlene
Arlene, your post made me think of that Mr. Rogers song "I like to take my time..." Now it's on an endless loop in my brain. Gee, thanks a lot!!!! (grin)
Oh, when I get inspired, I can do a lot in one day.
Sorry, Terry
:)
LOL, Bug_Girl!
When do you WORK!?
Let alone get away from taking care of your plants?
I am snowed under! I look out at the lake full of boats and wave runners. I tell my DH . . . they must not live here. Those of us that live here are constantly working to keep up our places!

Before I ever joined as a paid ember, I would take fotos of plants, but since I really joined, I have taken many more.
But since I have used the slow way - take photos on regular film, take them to be developed and scanned to a cd, the post..... that seems to take some of the urgency out of it.
Ergo, I, too have a buncha stuff to post but will save it for this winter probably, or at least until when my back is behaving again and I get caught up on all the other things I must do and am unable to do at present. Perfect time, though, with the slow-down on posting.
I can do it fast fast fast. I have everything digital from the camera, then I use infranview to reduce to correct size in one step. Then I even copy paste the latin name. I can add a plant in just three minutes. But, I like to spend longer to do a bit of checking of options.
