Happy Mother's day already !

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

As some of you know, I am as much a Mexican as a Texan.

I love the people, the country, the culture, the climate and everything else about it!

And one of their really beautiful customs is to REALLY have a big blowout on Mother's day.

It is ALWAYS on May 10th, regardless of which day of the week it falls on. And it is a national holiday, with offices closing down, etc. Mother is really a QUEEN on that day!

It all begins at midnight the night before, with groups of men and/or boys traveling the streets with guitars, violins, trumpets, giving serenades to their wives and mothers.

The streets of our hometown, Guanajuato, are narrow, made of cobblestone, with narrow alleys for streets, sometimes too narrow and steep for anything but steps and pedestrians.

The houses are wall-to-wall: it is like being in a medieval mediterranean town in Italy, France or Spain. Thus the acoustics are perfect for the musicians' sounds to travel, and intermingle within the town.

It is so very beautiful and romantic!

And it has advantages for us in both places - a two-day celebration!

So to all of you mothers, expectant moms, and those who have living moms...have a wonderful time today, and give thanks.

For those, like me, who no longer have a living mom, remember the good times and give thanks for the times you shared together.

Have a wonderful day today!

If I could I would give each of you a personal bear hug, a kiss on the cheek, and tons of rose bushes or whichever plants you love.

Thanks for being a mom, and a wonderful one as well!

Love and hugs on this beautiful day, Lavanda

Lavanda, we have lots of Mexicans here that also celebrate Mothers Day on the 10th of May. I love their custom of making her feel so special. Thank you for sharing.

What a great celebration Lavanda. I also wish you and all the great mothers here at DG, a very joyous day. Since this will be my DD's first Mothers Day, I am giving her the TOP pedastal tomorrow, I've already had 3l years of her love for me....it's her turn now and I am very proud of her as a new great Mother.

It has always impressed me to see the way the mothers are honored by the whole family in our Mexican community. Friday while I was shopping, a young lad, about 10-12, was shopping with his also young mother, and he said to her "Mom, do you want your chocolate now?" We were standing at a display of those special import candies, and she sort of laughed, probably because they ranged from $7 up to $40, and maybe he didn't have that much money for candy. So he took one from the shelf and handed it to her, laughing as he did. She pretended to be biting off some and rolling her eyes with pleasure, then put it back. The wistful look on his face assured me he would buy her such a box with his first paycheck, if it took him 15 more years. Throughout the store, Mexican people were excitedly selecting flowers, goodies and other gifts, as well as fancy bags for the presentation. One would have thought it was Christmas.
