an update

In case you don't know, DG is currently being hosted in Texas, out of our house (in fact, I'm using my personal desktop machine as our server!).

Our internet connection is a DSL connection, which is fast, but DG actually needs much more than this. Our link is almost 100% saturated at all times, and this is why the delays when folks try to access.

If I opened the PDB back up right now, we would be completely flooded and nobody would be able to access anything at all. Thus, in order to have some level of service at DG, we had to shut the PDB down. The PDB uses at least twice the bandwidth that DG does (because all the pictures).

Yesterday morning I ordered new hardware (yes, again) and it's being fedex'ed to me. When it arrives, I will set it up properly and ship it on to Tennessee, to the hosting company that has provided service to DG all these years. When they get it, they'll install it, and we can begin migrating the service back to TN. At that time, there will again be a little offlinet time during the transition (hopefully only an hour or so).

So, my goal is to be back to "normal" not this weekend, but next.

Dave

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for keeping us up on this situation.

I'm not really computer savvy, but it must be difficult to run such a site as DG from a desktop. I continue to be amazed at your spunk and ingenuity. We users are the fortunate beneficiaries of the results. I hope you never lose the enthusiasm and determination that keeps you plugging away when things go wrong, as well as the daily requirements of DG. You and your crew just can't be beat!

It is my hope that the transition goes as smoothly as possible, and that this will soon become just a page in the history of DG, one of the things we laugh or groan about when we take those little trips down memory lane.

Thanks, Dave, Trish and Terry.

Dave, We do so much appreciate all the work you are doing to keep this site up and running. I can't even imagine the headaches you must have had the past few days.I'll keep my fingers crossed that the transition goes through smoothly and trouble free. Thanks Dave for everything you are doing.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Everyone has said it everything already so just wanted to say "Thank you for all of your hard work to keep us going on DG" I'd be lost if I couldn't get to DG and probably wouldn't use the internet much at all if it was gone ;)

Thank you very much for your hard work. What a daunting task. I hope everything associated with the repairs and transition goes smoothly.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Dave I know you are really working hard on this. A little bit of DG is better than no DG at all. Hang in there we are not going anywhere.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hi, Dave.. I've been so busy that I missed most of the shut down time. I'm sure we're all busy with our outdoor activities now, so this isn't a bad time for a shut down. I hope you and Trish and family are doing well in Texas. I look forward to spending time on Dave's and in the PDB when the spring rush is over. I miss visiting with everyone.

I agree..., Dave, Trish, Terry..., the dynamic trio.

I remain impressed.

And, hey, that must be some desktop machine you're running down there in Texas.

Post specs?

(The ever~curious) Adam.

It's not that big of a machine.. In fact, it used to be the DG server until somewhat recently (I do hand-me-down desktops. First, I buy the server. Then, when I replace it, the server becomes my new desktop. Then my old desktop becomes Trish's desktop. And so forth).

My current machine is is an AMD Athlon 900Mhz with 1gig DDR 333 RAM, and, of course, my favorite part, a ViewSonic 21" G810 monitor running at 1600x1200. :)

Dave, thanks for the update and thanks for all your hard work along with Trish and Terry. We appreciate all that you are and all that you do and gardeners are by nature, very patient so please don't worry. We will be here no matter what and just like Peggy says, a little DG is better than no DG. Heck I just wish I was smart enough to do something to help. Thanks again....hugs to all of you! vic

Coincidentally I was in a store a couple days ago looking at this:

http://www.jandr.com/JRProductPage.process?RestartFlow=t&Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=2035&Product_Id=3665438

IT'S TERRIFIC!

Now, do I want to drill that deeply into my pocket just to open up space on my desk for more unfinished work?

On the other hand, we don't own a television so use the PC to watch films.

Decisions, decisions.

Adam.

That's a nice one. I bought Trish and vols a 17" LCD monitor last Christmas, and after seeing it in action, was about to trade in my 21" for one of those. (I repented of that, though). I can't imagine what bliss those 20" LCDs are.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Pleased to see AMD Athlon, which is what I opted for LOL
Will have to look into those monitors (no pun intended) they sound way cool!

Thanks for working so hard to keep DG running and keeping us updated with what's happening.
I look forward to the weekend after next :)

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

What a relief that DG will be down some! There is so much do do in the garden - I sit out there worrying that I am missing something on DG. This is a good time for it to happen if we have to be without DG. At the Iowa Round-up it was mentioned that we wouldn't have to worry about missing any action on DG while we were meeting. Otherwise there would be a long line at Shirley's computer LOL

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL twinlakes, are you suggesting a blessing in disguise? LOL
I can't imagine running this site from your desktop, but you do have a way with computers Dave & company!
Thanks for all your diligence to keep bringing joy into our lives through DG!
Candee

It's a Linux desktop. :)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm with TLC - following the storms we've had, I need to be spending every moment possible cleaning up and pruning.

(However, they're calling for more storms this afternoon, so I'm hoping my efforts weren't premature...ugh.)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I got most of the front bed planted yesterday, woke up to the sound of hail this morning,I'm ready for a break from this weather, don't misunderstand,I do like the rain.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Ah, we've got more rainy stormy weather in store. I should be out mowing, but have to take the dog to the vet soon....So, it'll wait. If it weren't for the darned dandelion flower stems being a foot tallker than the grass, it wouldn't be so bad!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL,Sorry to laugh,I'll compare stems with you,I am having a frontporch gathering,my first chore was to be mowing the front.

Lexington, NC(Zone 7a)

Grinning from ear to ear, mowed today. We have had our share of rain also. Took wife to eye doctor a couple of days ago, was gone three hours, grass had grown two inches while we were gone. LOL

Thank you so much Dave!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Thanks Dave! Just the way the site is running at all is a miracle. Here lately,I've been unplugged more than I've been plugged in because of the storms, but it doesn't mean I've abandoned you!Keep up the good work!

Trish...make him rest some...please!!

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I'm glad I found this thread as I wasn't sure if it was on my end or not. I had problems with chat on Tuesday but maybe that was a related issue? Thanks, Dave, for keeping us up and running!

I agree with TwinLakes on being a blessing in disguise this time of year! So much to do!!!!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Dave, Trish and Terry, They have said it all above. I just wanted to say that i too appreciate all the work and time it takes for what you guys do so well THANKS, Donna
