Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Well, things got blown around,a huge tree fell across the entrance to our soccer park where a tournament was going on.The emergency crews had to cut it up before anyone could leave.

The worst was the hail yesterday.Baseball sized in Paducah...we saw a truck shortly after it happened. It needs hood, top and bedsides replaced. The hail was slightly smaller in Calvert City...hens eggs.It got my Mom's and Uncle Joe's cars.I haven't seen them yet. They are coming out this afternoon. It pretty much hit as church was letting out all over the county,so few people were home..but lots of cars were out in it.

Lots of trees down and some are on houses, but I haven't heard of any injuries yet. Some chicken barns lost their roofs.

As far as I know, everyone is allright. Will wait for calls today.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We spent a tense hour in the hallway of our house at 2 this morning with unbelievable winds and quarter-size hail pounding us. The news folks are still sorting out exactly what happened, but it appears a tornado hit a few miles north of us, another one a few miles east. We've got some tree limbs down, a few plants with their roots exposed, and my hostas and brugmansia leaves are shredded, but I'm pretty hopeful everything can be saved.

I'm VERY VERY happy that our house is intact and - most importantly - my family is safe :)

I hope we hear good news from others who got hit by this system....

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Member skyeblu is in Stockton.MO. This town was pretty much destroyed.Hope they can check in and let us know how they are.

We have several other members in western MO and the Kansas City area, here's hoping for the best for them.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

oh my, I didn't even know tornadoes went through anywhere.
I hope everyone who lives there is alright. A tornado went through Clarksville a couple of years ago and wipe out much of the town that's sitting in the valley. My mom's house is further on up and she got lucky. A couple streets down from her it cut a house in half. It just tore off some her gutter and the neighbors shed door flew into the back of her car but no one was hurt. They are still trying to rebuild downtown.
Hoping for the best for everyone out there.

Thank God that all who have checked in are fine, despite the dreadful damage, downed limbs and destroyed flowers. I pray that skyeblu and all family and loved ones are in good shape. Am praying for their town and all whose lives have been touched by these awful storms.

Mitjo, tornadoes are pretty common in the US, especially in the midwestern and southern states -- that's where they tend to be most severe.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

smspears-sharon is in missouri too! Im praying that she and her family are ok and all of the others that are in these wicked storms paths!!!
80 tornados 38 deaths-SO FAR!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

from what I was told from my mom earlier, the tornadoes are still going strong in the clarksville, TN area (Ft. Campbell, KY) and down there. They had a microburst while she was at work today with winds at 120 miles an hour, rain, hail.........the automatic doors where she works were opening and closing like mad on their own. One building in town was destroyed, another in the industrial area was damaged pretty badly. They had another touchdown around 4:30 close to where she works. Her entire yard is flooded like it has never been flooded before. All the way up to the concrete driveway which sits about 6" taller than the rest of the yard. she said allot of her plants are either rotting from the water or have been washed away :(
Thank goodness everyone is safe though. Let's all hope for the best until we hear from everyone here at DG who lives close to the storms

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

Mitjo - Tornados are somewhat common in certain parts of our country. Some parts more common than others. We had a bad tornado here a few years ago.

Here's a map that shows where they are most common. I'm on the edge of one of those areas.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Anyone heard from our other friends in the storms' paths?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Shoe,we are all fine, wife told me they could see it across the valley,it is called the Cinco De Mayo storm here already,we had loss of life, but not as bad as it could have been, there were 20,000 people in the Rosedale park for celebrations within view, this could have been a very sad day for so many.
I sure hope the folks in Mi. are ok,I was watching the tv while unloading and Mi was getting hit.
Cares and prayers to all affected, nature can be cruel.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

root, so glad you weren't affected. I have been checking this thread to see that you have checked in. what a relief.

dori, hope you are ok too....check in when you can.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

My children and I were talking about tornadoes, and they wondered where else in the world they experience them, and I had to tell them I didnt know, we never hear of tornadoes elsewhere...typhoons yes - but that's on water, do any of you know of tornadoes anywhere else in the world? and if not, what causes them here?? or do we just not hear about them elsewhere?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Interesting question. I think I will send it to a local meteorologist who likes to teach. Stand by.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

we are fine here-the storms were south of me down by paul!!
They said 5 tornados were spotted down in detroit area!
we just got lots of Rain!

Dori and Root, I'm so glad you're okay. The pictures on the news are simply awful.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

you know pebble, that's a good point. I don't remember ever hearing of a tornado when I grew up in Germany. My mother and I were terrified when we came to the US and experienced a thunderstorm the way it is here. We never had those like that either, not that severe like you get them here. And a hurricane, never experienced one until I lived in GA and hurricane HUGO came our way. I was 7 months pregnant, my husband at the time left for turkey (Army) the day before it happened and we were all evacuated to the Gym on the military base. Most frightening time of my life. It turned at the last minute and hit SC..........very sad times as I remember

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Leaflady (EvaMae) lives in central Missouri, she hasn't checked in for a couple of days. I hope the storms missed her. Praying for those who got hit by them.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Anyone heard from Paul or Sdoglover1512? How about all our friends in TN??

"eyes"

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

I've had two near misses with tornadoes both in Hampton VA. The first one occurred about three weeks after I moved to the US and it was frightening. These powerful storms this week though were far more serious and I'm shocked at the devastation. Something strange happened here yesterday at 12.30. There was a huge explosion and the house shook and we have since learned that it was an earthquake, a minor one registering 3.9. We were approx 5 miles from the epicentre. I hope this was just a one off!! My prayers for everyone's safe keeping.

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

Glad to hear you are ok Rootdoctor. Was thinking about you going home in the middle of the storm. Did you make it home before they struck? Linda

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Yes I made it home dry,it has been storming off and on,since I got home,it sure was nice to meet you, have you seen the thread with pics?I do not remember if you had a camera? We sure got lucky on thw weather, the day we got together was perfect.
Root

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Glad to hear from you guys and thankful you are okay. Hope everyone else can check in soon. Perhaps one day in the not too distant future these devastating weather eruptions can be predicted much further in advance so people can better prepare.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

It hit hard here last night. Some houses were destroyed about 5 miles from here, but we had no damage.

Just a little North near Paducah, and in southern Illinois,it was devastating.18 wheelers were blown off I-24,there was a car found up in a tree, but no one was in it luckilly. It looks like it blew out of someone's driveway.Lots of LP gas tanks were blown out of people's yards. The roof blew off of a school.Only 1 death, but lots of injured.

They say tomorrow is supposed to be worse.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

We are fine here a tornado went over us but thanks the lord it was in the air hearing it was scary enough. Tupelo was hit last night several house trailers blew away but not one seriously hurt but more on the way in the next few days.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

under a tornado watch again now, keep us all in mind please.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

I will pray for you and all.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Hoping that everyone will be alright. My mom lives in TN too and it sure is scary hearing it all. Please check in to let us know how everyone is doing. Still hoping to hear from those who live in places that got hit really hard. It's going to be hard not knowing anything but I imagine that the phones are probably out in those areas. We just have to hang tight and hope for the best.
