Question About PopUps.

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

THIS IS LOW PRIORITY..., I KNOW DAVE'S PRETTY BUSY JUST NOW.

I just had a pop~up on Dave's Garden for the very first time.

This is when it happened:

I clicked on the name Kym in the Today's Birthdays list (unusual spelling and one of my great friends spells it the same way). When I got Kym's Member Page a pop~up from a insurance / brokerage firm called Accu~quote came up.

First time I have ever seen a pop~up on this site and I know Dave has a STRICT no~pop~up policy.

Wondering where it came from.

Any thoughts?

Adam.

Adam, I have been under severe attack by various pop-ups and attempts to hi-jack my computer. I haven't yet spent time trying to track down the culprit(s) but it happened to me a whole lot last night as I kept trying to log onto DG. Still happening.

If you haven't heard about it yet, hopefully this will be ending soon. The VA legislature signed a bill allowing for CRIMINAL prosecution of spammers. When it takes effect (not sure when) hopefully it will be expanded to allow for CRIMINAL prosecution of all the spyware and pop-up abusers.

I am going to try to find an accessible web site regarding the new law; right now I only know about it through registry-only services that cannot be linked.

Adam, I too, get pop-ups all the time on my computer, including here at DG. Dave doesn't have them but it's my understanding that they somehow "follow" us here. I've restricted their websites but somehow they break back in. It is so annoying.

Found a site. I also posted a thread in the "General Discussion" forum about this. http://www.everett.org/va-spam-law.html

Since you are a lawyer, Adam, I know it will make a lot more sense to you than to us laymen. Any translation would be appreciated!

'NoAds' works great for me.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

"eyes"

It works "eyes"! Today I got that MSN Messenger pop-up AGAIN and I just followed the instructions from NoAds, and now it's history ... never to bother me again. Geeeeze, these pop-ups irritate me. Just remember to open up NoAds immediately when you get any new pop-ups, and it just nabs it. ;) :)

It's not Dave's issuing pop-up's, rest assured of that. If you use Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you need to disable Windows Messenging Service (NOT the same as MSN Messenger). See this thread in the computer forum: http://davesgarden.com/t/380770/

OH!!! So cool. OK. I've done that. Thanks gardenwife. I sure was getting tired of those pop-ups. Much appreciated.

Julie

Edited: Actually, I never have received pop-ups on Dave's Garden either. It's the other times. :)

Wait!!! Now how did this happen??

I've got 'NoAd' targeting Messenger Service AND I did what you told me to do, gardenwife, I even double-checked to see that it is indeed disabled .... but I still got a pop-up from Messenger Service. Grrrrrr!

When I want no pop-ups whatsoever...I use the Opera browser or release 7 of Netscape's browser. Both of those browsers allow you to block any and all pop-ups regardless of what it is. You run into a problem if you DO want a pop-up....for example, on Yahoo news slideshows, it must do a pop-up for that. I can easily turn off the pop-up block and allow that to happen.

I try to avoid installing extra applications that run all the time and drag down my pc. Also, you never can tell what spyware gets installed when you install those. My goal it to have as few processes running as possible...I only want what must be running for everything to work right.

Addition: Netscape allow 'execptions' to the no pop-ups rule. So you can allow some sites to produce pop-ups if you want.

Thanks Jon. I'm going to try and download Opera and Netscape 7 and see how they work. I'm really tired of IE and all of its pop-ups.

Appreciate it!

Netscape is totally free...but I think Opera has a small area that has ads in it, unless you purchase the full version. I would suggest Netscape as a replacement for IE if that's how you want to use it. You can never really replace IE totally in my opinion. Some sites just don't work right without IE. I assume IE will eventually have an option to block pop-ups too. Soon I hope.

hczone: IE free here! :) I haven't had to use IE (except recently to figure out the IE bug in the images) since it first became used in 1997 (IE 3.0, if memory serves me) :)

I think my banking site is one site I can think of that acts funny if I don't use IE. But yeah...for the most part I have no trouble at all on Netscape.
