earthquake

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I was awaken this morning by something that was shaking my bed. It felt like someone was standing by the bed and skaking it to wake me up. I then realized the whole house was skaking. My first earthquake. Heard on T.V. that it was centered in Mo. I hope everyone is ok. Jim

Your first Earthquake! How strong was it? We just had a little 4.5 ;ast week. It has been pretty quiet here for awhile now But after being in LA for the last big one there and The bay area for that big one I figure we should be getting a mean one here soon! They can really be annoying when they wake you up out of a perfectly good sleep like that!

I hope it was a minor one and no one got too shook up by it. They can be a bit frightening if you aren't used to them and the big ones can even make us old hands nervouse!

Just heard it was centered in Al. It was between 4-5 according to the latest info.

Oh good! A little one! But when did that area start having earth quakes?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I just heard on the news that there were no reports of injuries but that because the area does not have our strict earthquake codes the smaller quakes can still cause a lot of damage in that area. And that because of the rare nature of quakes in that area most people there do not know how to properly respond to a quake.

Are they flooding the news with instructions in case it happens again? Such as getting into an internal doorway as far from windows and heavy falling objects as possible and staying inside. Or checking all gas lines after the shakeup
to make sure the lines are ok? Simple things like that save lives!

I saw on the news about the safey procedures. I don't think it caused much damage. Just a conversation item all day around here. Jim

"The Eastern Tennessee seismic zone, which extends from south west Virginia to north east Alabama, is one of the most active earthquake areas in the Southeast."
I was sleeping good, wish I'd felt it. I hope it's my last chance though:)

Jim, I am glad you are safe!!!!!

I felt my first quake when I lived in AZ in '91, my cats racing around the apartment woke me at 5 am. Quake raised huge waves on my waterbed, I thought my nieces were jumping on it to wake me. Thankfully they slept through it.

Zany, I left 'Frisco a week before the big quake in '89. I was so glad I missed it!!! Some of my co-workers were attending a conference in Oakland at the time. None were injured, but they were all terrified!

Yes. the 89 wuake was the worst I have experienced and I would just as soon not feel another of that magnitude again. In fact that is the first one that actually sent me scrambling under my desk for cover! The plaster was falling along with light fixtures and the building sisn't stop reeling for 10 minutes after the initial quake. All the traffic lights were out and it took me 5 1/2 hours to get across town to check on my son while the aftershocks kept hitting and made the road feel like a roller coaster ride. But we were lucky and had minimal damage. Broken windows, cracked plaster and lots of broken what knots but no severe damage like so many people had. My Brother was in a Hotel in SF for a convention and couldn't reach us by phone and was afraid to try to drive across the bay so it was 3 days befor we each knew the other was ok. In fact, that was the event that convinced me that a cell phone was more than a status symbol and was one of the modern pesty things that I no longer want to be without!

Glad you guys are okay, Jim! Earthquakes are so scary. The strongest I've experienced was 4.5, and it was very disorienting and strange. What a shocking way to be awakened!

I awoke to thunder, I thought, as I went back to sleep cursing the weatherman, lol.

Some earthquakes have no regard for rules! That area isn't supposed to get these things. It's okay for California, they're all mentally prepared for anything that feels like a wave. But not in the gentle South!

Hey, I wonder if that thing was messing with phone connections on its way through the earth's center!
