Lilac's

How do I start more Lilac's from an existing bush?

Howdy Tallen...(and welcome to DG!) I just started some cuttings last week. Take some new-growth branches and simply insert them in a good potting medium. You should pull the lower leaves off the cuttings leaving 3 to 5 at the top. Be sure to set them in a semi-shady place. You can also put a plastic bag over them to help keep in the moisture.
By the way, on the same plant I also did a few air-layerings. That would be less baby-sitting if you went that route. Are you familiar with that?

Thanks Horseshoe! No, I am not familiar with air layerings, how do you do that?

Tallen, I would suggest a little rooting hormone on the ends of those cuttings too, I think Shoe overlooked that part. There is a liquid product called dip n'grow that you can purchase at Fred Meyer. I would use about a 12 to l ratio water to hormone. And then stick them in a medium and keep them wet and as Shoe said out of the bright sun.

Thanks Len, or Jo...;>)
Actually, many times I don't use hormone and do just fine with it...and sometimes I just use cinnamon. For these cuttings I didn't use anything, but if you want to be "careful", Tallen, it sure isn't gonna hurt anything to use it. I've used the powdered stuff many times but am now glad to find a source for the liquid. (Thanks Lenjo! I'm gonna check it out.)

As for the air-layering, Tallen, let me look and see if I can find a link with pics...that will do you justice! Words (especially MY words) may be too confusing. (It's basically stripping a bit of bark at a designated place and wrapping it in moist peat, then wrapping that in plastic and then foil or the like...but let me find some pics, or maybe I'll take a few of my own, if that'll help.)
