odd question

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Does anyone know of a natural thing you can do to help fight nausea?

This is from a headache that is a side effect of a medicine I must take till the middle of May... and I can't take any medicines for pain to stop the headache.

Looking for ways to settle my stomach. Any help?

Thanks in advance. I know it's an odd thing.

hi Janiejoy
whenever I have a bad stomach I always drink peppermint tea. Simple but effective. I dont know if it will help you but it is worth a try :) and its very nice!

we always drink a strong brand of ginger ale and maybe nibble on a piece of sugared ginger ( bought in an oriental market) Dad and Mom learned these remedies in China.

Hope it helps, Lani

I've used several natural remedies. My Mom told me that anything sweet will help coat your tummy which eases the acid. That would help more than anything. But I've also used peppermint tea, coke syrup, (hard to find) and cammomile (sp) tea. I used to give that to AngelSong as a baby to help ease her tummy too. It definitely helped her. As bizzare as it might sound, water might help the headache.

I feel for ya......I hope this helps....

Janie I'd go with something with ginger in it. When I dropped the knife on my finger the doctor prescribed hydrocodone (sp), oh my did it make me sick. I was so glad I had ginger ale so I was able to get some sleep. I hope you feel better.

you can buy crystallized ginger in just about any health food or vitamin type store. It keeps for a very, very long time and it takes the nausea away. I used to have migraines daily and along with it, the nausea and the crystallized ginger really did the job :o)

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

heat a slice of fresh ginger about the size of a quarter in a cup or so of milk until it's nice and hot, then sip it,, works wonders! Hope you feel better soon :o)

Wow, thanks everyone! I have another full month of this stuff ahead so your help is greatly appreciated!

THanks

Yes, ginger is the ticket -- crystallized, boiled in water and drunk as tea, grated and added to food, and any other form you can think of! Ginger is also a potent anti-inflammatory agent, and might well help your knee.

Banana's are good too, I always give them to my kids when they can't seem to keep anything else down. My Mom always told me that once you eat a banana you can't get it to come back up. My kids have been soooo sick with a stomach virus and we done everything like jello, crackers, rice, potaotes and everything came back....then we done a banana and it stayed down! I am a true believer in them naners!
Hope some of these folks have helped you out. They are such a sweet bunch a folks aren't they?!

Carena the ginger in milk sounds good to me.
Janie I've also put fresh ginger in chicken soup or broth, it adds a wonderful flavor.

Another vote for Ginger! Either Gingerale, and yes, Canada Dry works best, or ginger tea.

MOLLYBEE post reminds me of the BRAT diet:
Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast- whenever you just cannot eat anything, they work.

I agree...ginger works!
Mollybee, thanks for the tip...I'll remember the banana!

Another good thing about the banana's is they are very filling. So it does help to fill the stomach and takes away the hunger plus settles your stomach all at one time.

Sometimes milk reacts with medications to cause stomach upset, such as with antibiotics. Ask your doctor how the proteins in milk might react with what you are taking.

Sometimes, chemotherapies cause the microbial flora in our stomachs and intestines to die out. This can be a source of stomach / digestive issues.

Fully cultured yogurt, or live acidopholus (which you can get at healthfood stores), is helpful in restoring the balance there.

My mother, who has had difficult nausea due to chemotherapy, has found the candied ginger very helpful.

I hope you feel better.

Adam.

Y'all are wonderful.

Bananas and yogurt are foods that contain the amino acid tyramine, which I am forbidden due to taking this same med that is making me feel so horrid. But I will remember your advice for when I can resume normal eating - around the first of June. Hurrah for the first of June! I think the first thing I shall eat is a tomato!

I had hubby buy me a ginger root and am planning on making myself a chicken soup I can eat when I don't want to eat anything else. That should do the trick - and maybe make a ginger tea that I can refrigerate and sip through the day...

Plus I dug out all my soothing teas - Grandma's tummy mint, peppermint, Mint Medley and Cozy Chamomile...

Thanks for all your ideas and for taking time to share your remedies.

Love to all,
Janie

gingerale is good and I also have eaten just plain soda crackers to help settle an upset stomach.

Hi, all (from Troy's, um, friend..yeh, that's it!) In addition to all the EXCELLENT remedies from all of the wonderful people on here for settling your nausea (I find either ginger in any form or chai tea made with water in your case, not milk) you can also use lavender essential oil to ease the headaches. A drop on your fingertip and rubbed on the spot where the pain seems to be is best.Put some lavender flowers in a pot of water and put it on the stove to simmer. I can't speak on the wonders of mint, as I am allergic to anything in the mentha family. I've become extremely creative when it comes to healing myself of a cold/flu since almost every OTC med has menthol in it. Pick up a book on self-healing techniques (specifically meditation, self-massage, pressure points, etc..) A month may seem like an eternity until you can once again feel like enjoying life to its fullest again, but with all you've received here, I hope it flies by pain-free.-b.

Just a note about ginger ale: Many brands don't contain real ginger, so be sure and read the label. (Jamaican Ginger Beer is a good one to try.)

Hope you're feeling better!

Just wanted to thank you all again for the ginger tip. I had hubby buy a big ol' ginger root at our local grocery store, chopped it up in small pieces, and cooked it with water and sugar to make like an instant syrup that makes a delicious, spicy-sweet tea to drink and wow! what a difference it made in my tummy!

I'm excited to know that it also has anti-inflammatory properties since I kind of overdid it today - first time back to church since January, first time eating in a restaurant, first time in a store (I got to ride one of those zippy carts - what a great way to shop!)... and I'm a bit tuckered out! I know I'll pay for it tomorrow but Sunday I am going to go to my own church for the first time so I will rest tonight.

Love to all
Janie

Sounds like you had a very full day! How exciting to be able to go back to church at Eastertime -- a real sign of inward renewal. Glad to hear that you made such a yummy ginger concoction, and that it helps.
