Variegated iris?

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Ok, I must be living in a vacuum. I had no idea that iris foliage could be "multi-colored". Does anyone have any of these plants? Do they basically grow the same as the solid green ones?

I just saw an ebay auction for Iris Pallida 'Aureo Variegata'. It's stunning.

Can someone clue me in here...

HI, Our local nursery featured 2 kinds-Alba variegata (white and green striped leaves) and Aurea Variegata-cream with green stripes-they both have medium blue blooms and bloom in Southern WI in June. They grow 18" high and in the sun. They are listed for fragrance and rock gardens and are noted to be treated as Iris germanica. 'The cost is 7.50 with 5.5% tax. They do not do mail order, but if ebay is asking a lot more (not including postage )- ?!?

Wal-Mart had some bareroot iris with variegated leaves on clearance last fall, and I missed out on them. >:-(

We have some growing in a bed in our community garden.

Smiln, I "discovered" variegated iris this year, too. Stumbled across a photo in a book, and instantly NEEDED some (grin)

I ordered some plants through PoppySue's Green Mt. Transplant co-op; hoping they'll grow and multiply (but perhaps not QUITE as vigorously as my "yellow iris") in my pond this year.

I have some Pallida, the bloom scent is heavenly! Almost like grape candy!?

Oh Carla, they are gorgeous!! It has been one of my most wanted plants forever. When you do find them, they are pricey.

I grow Iris japonica variegata for the foliage, it gets too cold here for the bloom stalk to survive. The leaves are white and green, with a touch of purple at the base. I also have both forms of Iris pallida, the creamy-yellow one, and the white one. The white form was found at Home depot last year, in full bloom, for 4.95! Imagine that, usually it is pretty rare and expensive, they had racks full of them at a low price.

we had them in the co-op last yr

Another good one I grow is Iris foetidissima variegata, which prefers shade.

John - does the bloom smell as terrible as the name suggests?

GW, I'll let you know if it bloom this year, it has not yet. But I am pretty sure it is called the 'stinking iris' for a reason!

Well, I think I know what the next plant I plan on buying is then. The auction on ebay only went for $2.99 plus shipping. Sounds like that was a fair price, then.

Smiln, my Home Depot had some in quart-size pots tonight...and if MY HD had it, your Lowe's and/or HD might, too. (At least it seems like yours usually has a better selection of plants :) I didn't see a price (they were on a rolling cart waiting to be taken somewhere, but I'd guess they were in the $3-$6 range... (Let me know if you want me to do more than scout it out...I owe you at least one box at this point!)

Terry,

You don't owe me anything. You're doing me a favor. I want some starts off of some of those plants when we finally get settled somewhere...sometime in 2014. :)
