Newbee Questions

I'm new here, couple things I'm confused about - if I email someone in DG do they email me back my "TamTam" name and it automatically goes to my aol address?? And if I'm "following" a thread (I clicked on two to follow) where do I see when something new has been added? AND (just one more!) I want to know about "layering" lavender, seems like the only thing to search for is plant names! Help and thanks!

TamTam, if I correctly understand your question about watching threads, perhaps this will help: http://davesgarden.com/t/376494/

I am not sure about the fine points of e-mailing and searching. I do know that no one will learn your e-mail address unless you want them to; if you only e-mail people from this site, using the link on their member pages, they will never know your actual e-mail address.

If you email someone via DG, your personal email address will show up in the recipients mail box. If someone emails you but you don't answer the mails, there isn't a way for them to find out your email address from DG.

I almost always delete anything from email addresses I don't know due to spam and I'm sure I've managed to delete honest emails from here and elsewhere because they've not put something relevant in the subject line. If you are goig to email someone, it might be wise to add that you're from DG in the subject line.

Tamtam you can always ask on the Herb or Propagation forum for hints and tips on layering Lavender, there's almost always an answer to a thread.

If I e-mail someone from DG by going to the member's page and using the e-mail link, when my mail arrives in the member's mailbox it lists Dave's Garden as the address -- right?

So...if I receive an e-mail from someone on DG and click "reply" in my e-mail program, write a response and then click "send," my e-mail address will appear in the recipient's mailbox (even though I still don't know his or her actual e-address); but if I want my e-mail address to remain concealed, I can go to DG and send an e-mail via that person's member page, just as they did when they e-mailed me. Is that the way it works?

Not in my experience. Were I to email you via DG now, my email address would be revealed to you.

I'm happy to be wrong in this but I've sent you a quick email as an experiment, you don't have to answer, just to see if that's how it works.

Baa, thank you for that "hands-on" tutorial! Yes, your e-mail address did show up in the e-mail you sent me from DG. I see how it works. Thank you for asking the question, TamTam, and Baa for answering it!

My pleasure Whiterose. I was curious to see for myself, as I said above I delete emails if the subject line doesn't say something relevant and I don't know the address. Most of the people I talk to fairly regularly have done so for a long time. I wondered if things had changed!

Whiterose, for those of us who are computer nuts, it is very easy to find out the sender's "real" e-mail address, even if sent through a secure source like Dave's. But only by replying to an e-mail will that person find out who you really are, as well as your address. Dave set up good security so that members here cannot just access all the members' e-mail addresses without getting an acknowledgement from that person.

If you want to answer an e-mail without giving away your address, then the best way would be to set up a second account for that one particular use. I have a second one that I give to places that "require" an e-mail address (no, not here). That address is wont_read. Pretty much says it all, huh? I just go in and delete all the mail every week.

What great information! Thank you, lupinelover. TamTam, it's good that you asked these questions!
