Lavendar Water?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

An 'upscale' catalog I receive in the mail touts lavendar water for use in your iron to use on pillowcases, blouses, etc. I can't imagine there's lavendar oil since that would not mix. Any ideas how to make this or is it just an expensive come on. I don't want to ruin my iron - or my clothes! Thanks for thoughts.

To make lavender water, you use 25 ml of oil of lavender (either commercial or your own by expression), and mix it with 840 ml of isopropyl alcohol. Shake well, allow to sit for 48 hours. Shake again, and allow to sit another 48 hours. After that it can be put into small bottles or used.

I don't go to all the trouble to make the water; I dry my lavender and make wands and other decorative things. The flowers that fall out as I work are collected and put into bags that go in my drawers or in the linen closet. Has the same effect without the added work :)

Thanks so much! Grove City - let's see, just west of Columbus on or about #30 towards my REAL home in Indiana!

Lavender Water was originaly (and still is) a byproduct from the steam distillation of lavender oil. Ll's water sounds like a good replacement; but if you want to use it on your body or in food, it would probably be wise to replace half the isopropanole with water.

Good point, Arsenic; my recipe is for non-consumption only!!! To make a water suitable for use in recipes you should either make your own distillation, or buy food-quality essential oil. Mix with a good-quality alcohol that has little flavor or aroma of its own: vodka would work well.

Few people have the equipment anymore to distill their own essential oils; that is why there is a good commercial market for the finished product. If you buy it for cooking purposes, make absolutely sure it is labeled as a food. The cost is much higher, but the ones sold for fragrance purposes are usually made by methods or using ingredients that would be very harmful if taken internally.

Dohopp, you're right: Grove City is southwest of Columbus :) So happy to meet another midwesterner. I have a brother in Indiana; they have a home outside Avon. Your "real" home is in IN? Where?

This is also know as Linen Water......

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

South of Ft. Wayne in the rural part of Allen/Adams County. Lived in a very small town called Poe for a time when very small and then just south of Baer Field for a long time right on the St. Mary's.

I think we love Columbus as much as we love Indiana - it's such a wonderful town and outlying areas.

We go "home" as many weekends a year as we can fit it - never enough though.

Oops - got wrapped up in the Midwest! The "Ironing Water" I see is $12 for 35 oz. !!!!!!

That's why I want to make my own for ironing. I also understand that it's helpful for sleep, something I'm having a hard time with lately.

Try Kava-Kava (Piper methysticum) if you need a herbal sleeping aid:)

Well, as you might tell from my handle, I am CRAZy about lavender, the secent, the color, the plant, everything!

But I am also a bargain hunter, and the lavender scented linen water at Ross is $3.95 for about a quart-sized bottle.

Honey, until you have slempt in a lavender-scented bed, you
have not rested soundly!

I agree; the smell is wonderful! I wish they cold make fabric softeners smelling of lavender...

Are you really supposed to put that 'lavender water' in your iron, I thought you were supposed to sprinkle it on your pillow cases or bedding before ironing? I have always thought of buying it but have always wondered if it really was any good. Just love lavender.

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

You can do it either way. I just sprinkle it on, since I wouldnt want my iron to get clogged up.

And although I always smell like lavender, the guys in this household dont want to.

There WAS, and may still be in some parts of the US a fabric softener scented with true lavender scent, not fake, articial wannabe lavender scent. (I cant stand the fake stuff)

It is called Lavender Sachet and is made by Ligett & Myers.
If anyone finds any, PLEASE LMK.

BTW, I run a mail list about gardening, crafting, and cooking with lavender if anyone is interested.

Love, Lavanda

There are a lot of herb-based sleep pillow mixtures that may help. I sometimes use one of lavender with rose and lemon verbena. Othertimes I use rosemary and lemon, along with thyme. Hops is especially good to add to sleep pillows.

I have taken a couple classes learning to make these; so simple, but so great!

Hi, everybody,

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd ask here anyway---so thanks in advance, everybody!

I looked up recipes for Lavender Linen (Ironing) Water today (since I ran out of my one gift bottle ironing napkins for TG) and wondered where is the best place to buy these 'essential' oils that they talk about? Will any store like "Bath and Body Works" do, or should I be more selective?

The different recipes call for orris, chamomile tea, peppermint, for instance...and then the vodka.

Well, here are some links, if anyone else is interested... http://www.transworldusa.com/tpro/essential_oils/lavender-linen-water.htm

I love the French stuff I'm using, but it's just too pricey. It makes ironing (which is my most favorite of all my dreaded household chores actually kind of fun!)

And I'd like to try to make some various Linen Waters for Christmas gifts.

I'm very ignorant about herbal mixtures and perfume oils... so any thoughts would be appreciated.

I get the Lavendar essential oil at a local health food store - thanks for bringing this thread backup t :) Wow, do the pillowcases and sheets smell good.

My favorite though is to iron a white blouse - feels so good all day long :)

If anyone is still looking at this thread, I'd like to find out which lavandula gives you the longest stems for making wands. I have lavandula stoechas which is not old enough to harvest yet, but I understand it's a fairly short variety. Any suggestions?

This is an old thread but I found something in the line of a natural lavender fabric softener. the four star reviews look good.
