My daughter bought this for me. Pkg says it grows up to 4" in 24 hours! Grows so fast you can almost see it grow!
OK. Says to file on the underside of this large seed, before soaking overnight. We have filed, we have scaped, we have used various knives and short of hitting the seeds with a hatchet, theres not even a vague mark where we've been trying to nick it. (its size of small fingernail). Does anyone know how we can nick this thing without destroying it? It has yellow blooms, Can this be the so-called yellow morning glory???
Ipomoea Tuberosa
do you have a dremel? That's what I use for cannas and such.
Oh great idea. I'm sure my son has one. I'm going to call and see. I'm axious to see how this thing will do. There was only one seed in the commercial pack!
can't wait to find out what it is. Get a good grip on your seed before you put the dremel to it in case it shoots out of your hand.
I'm glad you warned me. I'll wrap it in a wash cloth so I can keep a grip on it!
well....it might grab that wash cloth faster than your finger. I never had a problem, just test use the dremel in the air so you know how fast it goes and all.
Ok, will do. Hopefully I can do the deed tomorrow!
On my White Moon Vine seeds I use small pliers to just slightly crack the seed. I don't know if your seeds are large enough for pliers.
Honeybee
http://www.hear.org/pier/metub.htm
Here is a site that has it and quite a bit of information about it. If you get seeds from it this fall, I'd sure be interested in one or two of them. I'm sure I can find something to trade for them. Looks very interesting to me.
honeybee....I just soaked my Moonflower seeds in warm water for two days and they opened!!! today I planted them! E.
djm906, nevermind. I just ordered some seeds. Will have some extras if you want some more when you come to the Roundup.
couldn't resist, eh Brugie???
Nope....I'm a pushover for something new to me.
i use the nail clippers with handles. they work great for nicking just about any seed i've come across.
The outside on these is a very hard wood. I tried sawing on it with kitchen knives, tried coarse sand paper to get through it, no luck. I let them soak overnight, hoping it would soften the seed coat, and it's still as tough as ever. We don't have a dremel, I may have to go out and get one!!
I grew one from seed several years ago..It grew to the tip top of one of our huge southern oaks, in one summer..I never saw a bloom and forgot to get a cutting for the winter..Good luck..I thought maybe in our long growing season it would have time to bloom, but I guess not..LOL

Larkie, How did you ever get the seed cracked to get it growing? (haven't gotten hold of a dremel yet) This IS the flower for this seed I have.
I never knick or soak seeds.. I just plant, and never have any trouble..Sorry..Good luck with yours.

I have some extra seeds for the Hawaiian Woodrose, AKA Ipomoea Tuberosa. Would trade for anything unusual, especially vines. Email me if you want to trade. Doris is right....these seeds are huge. Will send 10 seeds. Then you can trade with someone else too.....I doubt we would want very many of these things if they grow that fast.
Brugie, or anybody, where are the seeds for Merrimeia, Ipomea tuberosa, or whatever available. I would like to try one or two, may be too late in season for me. Something is wrong at my ISP, he is out of town, I can'g received anything on Outlook Express, for a day or two I guess. Donna
Donna, send me your address and I'll send you a few seeds. If you can't mail out, maybe someone here can send it to me.
That vine looks like it intends to take over the world!! I sure hope it flowers for you all. very pretty. I will be looking forward to your reports on this one. So brugie............will this one be the number 2002 plant you have growing in your GH? LOL
Kell, I was afraid to put this one in the greenhouse for fear it would choke everything else out. I already have a clematis, lavender moonvine, and some air potato vines growing in there, not to mention all the blackeyed and blushing Susie vines. Heck, I even forgot all the morning glories that are started. I may be in bigger trouble than I originally thought. Do you want some seed Kell?
Looks like it would be too big for my yard and it would probably grow all year here.....LOL.........the rest of my yard would be gone! But thanks so much Brugie......you are a friend!! What is a blushing susie vine?
Here is a picture of the flowers. I saved my seed from last year's vine. It didn't do very well and I'm not sure that I have seed from all the colors, but wanted to give it one more try. This picture came from the T&M site. It vines heavily and mine didn't bloom nearly as well as the picture shows them to bloom.
WOW those are too pretty!
Until I hear that someone else can grow them like this, they aren't that pretty. It is just that the blooms are such a different color than the usual yellow, orange, and white with the black eye.
Well you could always copy that picture and glue them on your vines............LOL
This summer is it. If it doesn't work, it is out of here. I just read, I think, that each plant is supposed to carry all the colors. So, I'm going to find out this summer.
Yes, same type plant. If I can figure out how to pack one, I'll send it with the other plant I'm mailing. Hang in there because from seed they are very expensive. I found one place that sells the plants. Avant is the name if I am remembering right. This fall, save seeds from any of your thunbergias. They germinate very easily.
Brugie
we are trading now for sure!! Those are beautiful. I will send you another e-mail of course!!
sorry, edited after I realized I had already made contact with you LOL

Ipomoea tunerosa---or more accurately Merremia tuberosa---takes at least two years to flower, but---the good news is, it may be more hardy that we thought! Just talked to a guy in New York State who's kept one alive outside over the winter. He has it planted 15" deep, and mulched heavily, but it IS alive.
As for nicking the seed---wish I'D thought of using the Dremel! I sat here with a razor knife and shaved off the tip-end, seemingly a few molecules at a time. Then I soaked it overnight and planted it, and it was up TWO DAYS later! (Well, one out of two, anyway. They other one STILL isn't up, five days later.)
Another way to do the seeds is to use a bench grinder on them...just watch the fingers.
Heavy duty cuticle clippers work very easy. Two clips with them and you are done. I use them on all my hard coated seads.
Has anyone grown one in a container and held it over? I would have to do that. I guess a big DEEP container.

Brugie,
I would like to try ipomoea tuberosa. I have passiflora Incense rooted cuttings to trade. I would prefer a rooted cutting in return, if possible.

Email me, Shirley - I'd like to try some of your seeds - I traded for some a couple of years ago and they didn't germinate. I hope I can come up with something you might like.
I'm sorry you two, but I gave out almost all I had at the Roundup and I need to keep the few I have for next year in case mine doesn't winter over. Wish you had written me sooner. If my vine makes it over the winter, I'll sure share the few I have left next spring.
Brugie,
What is the latin name for Blushing Susie?

My daughter was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico this past Christmas. She saw a vine that was all done blooming and she collected seeds from it. She said customs almost took her seeds but she explained it was a gift for her mom. Anyhow, I planted a couple of months ago. Some of the seed had gotten moldy. To make a long story short I have five baby something or other. Doing a google search of this ipomoea tuberosa, I am beginning to wonder if this isn't what I have got. When the first two leaves came up, I certainly did immediately think morning glory of some sort. She never saw bloom at all. The seed was smaller than sweet peas but bigger than most other seeds, maybe about 1/2 the size of sweet peas. I soaked before planting. The second sets of leaves look kind of lobed like the pictures I saw on google. It isn't growing really that fast either. But then it has been very cool here and they are in the greenhouse on a heating cable. My DD keeps saying mom they need heat lots of heat. What do you think this might be? What a surprise if it is indeed this yellow morning glory?Joann
