Giving Membership as Gift??

How would I go about giving membership to a friend??

Is your friend already signed up on DG? If not, you'll need to start there. Log out, and sign your friend up using his/her email address. Or if this is a complete surprise, you can use your email address, and change it later.

After the new username is set up, log out, and log back in as yourself. Then, proceed to the subscription area (found by clicking on Subscription on the right hand side of the page). Click on "pay by credit card" (or paypal if that is your method). The top box asks you who the subscription is for. It automatically inserts your name in it. Delete your name and type in the user name that you just subscribed. Fill out the rest of your CC info as you normally would.

That's it!

Is there a way this could be done so that the recipient of the surprise could choose a member name? Maybe an automatically generated e-mail with a temporary username/password when a subscription is paid for username, say, "gift_subscriber", and a unique e-mail is typed in? I'm not sure how it would all tie together without lots of human intervention on your parts, though. I know changing a username is something you don't like doing, but is there a way a recipient could choose his/her name?

I do like Gardenwife's idea. I really want gift to be totally
unknown. Wish there was away to
pay & the receiver just get e-mailed from Dave's that saying
they have a years membership. Is there away to do that??

I'm sorry, but the only way for your person to not know at all is to make up his/her username yourself. This situation doesn't come up very often, so Dave has not programed a better way. As it is, the administrators can't be responsible for personally going through around 100 or more new signups daily making sure that one of them was not a gift.

That being said....Honeybee- email me and we'll see what we can by email with your friend.
