zone classification

(Zone 10b)

Is there a zone for the area of Panama that abuts Costa Rica? It is tropical rainforest on the Caribbean side, about 8 degrees north of the equator.

Or if there is no official zone designation, which U.S. zone is closest to it climactically?

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

if i am not mistaken, u are in a microclimate... meaning u are located in an area with mix climate. my guess would be betw. 9b-10a ... http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hzm-se1.html see for urself, maybe u know better, once u see the map

It might be higher than that if it is at sea level.

If it never freezes or frosts, then it is considered tropical.

The US zones actually are used to indicate freeze and frost-related places, and may not extend that far (to
central america).

I have kinda teh same situation, I wisah I klnew the zone for our property in Mexico. It is at 6000 ft al;titude,
but because it is so far south, it hardly ever freezes. I have seen one light frost. Once in a while it might snow, but doesnt stick.

People dont use heaters, and when it is cold in the winter, as soon as the sun rises, it hets back up to at least 55-60 degrees F.

Citrus thrives, poinsettias are an average of 20 ft talll (they never die or freeze back), and jacarandas & boungainvilleas also thrive.

So anyone could guess what the zone is.

I bet your place you re asking about is about the same situation.

Oh, and coffee doenst grow well when there is any freez or frost.

Some year, once in a while, we will hear of a coffee freeze, and that is when the price of coffee becomes sky-high!

So it is difficult to guess what

Thanks, Lavanda. Actualkly, I am right down at sea level, which is why, in building a pond, I have a problem with brackish water. Temperatures in my area rarely drop below 70 degrees, even at night, so I suspect I'm in the 10a, 10b, or even 11 zone.
