Explosion

I was sitting at my computer this afternoon and a little after 5:00 it sounded like something landed on my roof and the house shook. I went outside and I didn't see anything. I left to go out to dinner and the radio said you can't get through Newton which was the direction I was about to go in. Luckily I took another route. A propane truck exploded in the company's yard. I have to tell you it was quite scary not knowing what happened. The fuel company is right in the middle of a residential area. This is a fairly small town and you can't imagine how backed up the traffic was.
I just saw on the news that thankfully no one was injured. They're still fighting the fire and I pray that no fire fighters are injured. They must be close to frozen by now.

Elsie, how awful. I join you in your prayers for the firefighters' safety, and gratitude that no one was hurt when the truck exploded. It could so easily have gone the other way, since the fuel company is in a residential area. The people in that neighborhood must be very concerned at this point, wanting to know what can be done to prevent something like this from happening again -- perhaps with less fortunate results.

The news I got last night was from the NY news. There were four helicopters in the sky after the expolosion. It's so hard to get news around here. ONe of the papers has 13 people in the hospital including one fire fighter. Mostly cuts from shattered glass and ruptured eardrums. Luckily none of the employees were injured. Someone heard a hissing noise and evacuated the area and called 911 before the explosion. 750 people were evacuated from their homes. I think it's a miracle that no one was seriously injured or killed.

You are so right, it is a miracle that there weren't more, and worse, injuries! It could have been a devastating tragedy. Ruptured eardrums and lacerations are bad enough. I truly don't understand how the zoning regulations could have allowed such a potentially dangerous business to exist in the midst of a residential area.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Wow - What a relief someone noticed and was fast-acting!

Whiterose it's not really just residential, but mixed with lots of businesses. They don't normally have propane at this site. It's where their offices are or were.

Ah, that explains it. I was really wondering how such a business could be allowed in that location. This was truly a horrible confluence of circumstances!
