YAY! spotted them tonight! It's spring..yippppieeeee!
June bugs are here!
so THAT'S the sign of spring! Yay!
We used to look forward to June bugs so much! After a long winter of nuttin but wimpy-leafed collard greens, mushy ground carrots, and moldy hamsteaks, we'd always look forward to Junebug season. It was great fun to knock them outta the air using anything from home-made spears to slingshots. As they fell to the ground the youngin's would gather them up by the hundreds, carry them to Granny and she would quickly wring their little necks, roll 'em in cornmeal and flour (perfectly seasoned) and set em aside! What a feast we'd have! Fried Junebugs topped with, with, with....well, maybe I've spoke too much. Sorry, was getting carried away.
Ah yes...June bugs are here!
LOL Shoe! You know you didn't eat no Junebugs!! LOL
The only thing I remember about Junebugs was tieing a string around their little leg and spinning it around and around our head! Watching it try to fly all the while we had it tied to our string lol such mean kids we were! I wouldn't touch one now...I don't like the way their legs cling to your fingers eeeeek Days of childhood gone for good I guess!
Molly! You ain't right! τΏτ ;>)
Are these green bugs you are talking about, or Rose bugs, the hardshelled brown ones that are the last stage of a grub? I set a tub of water in the back yard, under the guard light, and rejoice as hundreds of them take a suicide plunge into the water. Every day, I empty it and refill it for the newcomers to have a fresh swim. And so they can't climb onto the backs of each other to survive. When I had ducks, the population was decimated, because the ducks ate loads of the grubs and then ate the bugs they missed as grubs. Alas, the numbers are on the rise. I think the skunks have helped keep them down, as I see where they make little holes in the soil to eat the grubs.
But I don't see the green June bugs around here. Somehow, they weren't as disagreeable.
June bugs already?? They only arrive late May and into June here (as their name suggest), but you're not alone in the way you played with them Mollybee. In 'My Family and Other Animals' Gerald Durrell describes doing just the same as you with rose chafers on Corfu :)
Of course this is where bats come into their own - the larger sp in the UK make a beeline for the June bugs and chafers when they emerge and they get rid of them as fast as they can. Yum yum!!........crunch crunch.....
See Shoe, I ain't too crazy!
;-D
♫ Good Golly Miss Molly! ♫♫ I wasn't saying you was crazy!....just perfectly abnormal! It's a gift!
Altho I never tied strings to june bugs to watch them fly around I remember the summers when we'd be up at Bernie Barnaby's house (he raised 3-legged coon dogs). Just for fun we'd get his best dog, Tripod, and tie the lower legbone of a cow to a string, and the other end to Tripod. When city folks would come to visit we'd sit on the porch in the evening and 3-legged Tripod would amble up, stand there on all his legs, and commence to chewing on that cowbone. The city folks would freeze at the site of a 3-legged dog, then wonder what he had, we'd all say in unison "that's his other leg! Reckon we better feed him this month, eh?"...and then we'd go back to shellin' boiled peanuts and talking 'bout the weather. Great fun in those days!
:) Shoe! You are a hoot!!
why thank you! τΏτ
Shoe, I totally enjoyed that little story. What a great name for a three legged coon hound!
Ok now where is Lisa?? You reckon she is out there trying to tie a string around that Junebugs leg? er better yet is she trying to fry it up cajun style? LOL
Come out come out come out where ever you are! LOL
hey mollyb, *yawn* I'm here..I think..lol. I was laffin' so hard at shoes story I couldn't type-he ain't right in the head ya know (shhhh, don't tell him I said that)..or is it that I am a zombie from lack of sleep these days?? -awaiting the birth of kids(baby goat kind) can be exhausting-
Awww Lisa I bet you are give completely out! It's almost like a watched pot...it never seems to boil!
But you just get some much needed rest, and be sure and post some pics of those cuties when they do get here.
*grin*-mollyb, it is worse than a boiling pot..lol..at least I could turn that off and go to sleep! I have a baby monitor in their stall at night so I can hear what is going on. They are groaning and grunting all night. I get up at least 2 times a night to go check on them. Not to mention that I seem to wake up every hour. I doze off only to wake up a few minutes later. Bags so big under my eyes, I could put a load of groceries in em. ;-) ahhh, but soon, very soon...those little cuties will be here. The moms are huge!
How many mother's are expecting? I bet that would get a little tiring after a while huh? But once they are born just looking at them will be a hugh payoff! It'll all be worth it in the long run.
Shoe that is a wonderful story. I'll have to try it on the grandkids the next time they are around here. I'll give you credit after I make them think I relly did that.
Molly that was fun with the bugs and the string. I never see the June bugs any more. Maybe I ain't looking or ran out of string.
mollyb, 3 Does (moms) are expecting, 2 are pros one is a first timer. The first timer is my main concern. :-)
This is soo neat! Be doublely sure you take some pics because I wanna see them! Now I'm getting excited lol
Oh my gosh those are pretty animals! Let us know when the kids arrive!
O Lisa!! I want one!!! Those are soo cute! Think I could trade ya some marigold seeds for one of them LOL Just KIDding LOL
I'll keep my fingers crossed that she has her's tonight. Then maybe you can get alittle rest tomorrow. Is it natural that all of them are expecting at the same time? Or did you plan it that way? You're soo lucky to live where you can have animals like that, and then raising babies too!
Keep us updated now ya hear, I wanna see them kid's!
thank you weeds and mollyb
nothing last night :-( It was a loooooooong night..lots of grunts and groans, but nothing.
Mollyb, I don't know for sure the due dates for the girls. I brought the buck here 150 days ago and that is how I figured out when to start the wait. The Does carry for 150 days. It is highly unlikely they will all kid on the same day. I just know to be on ready on the 145th day. They most likely were not all breed on the same day, but with in days apart.
Maybe if you pretend to not be waiting and watching....just maybe they will begin to have their kids.
We can at least hope so anyways.
Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be sooooon!
