about "journal"

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Is there a tutorial on this?

Is there a way to copy and paste articles to refer to them again in the journal spot? If not, I think it would be a neat feature!

Ya know, as we get older...

violabird,

Journal help:
Open up your journal. Scroll down to "Manage Categories" and add a name (maybe "2002 Journal" or whatever makes sense to you.)

Hit submit.

Go to your Main Page (link in the right-hand column)

Scroll down to "Access by Category" and click on the category name you just created.

Click on "Add an Item."

Now you'll see boxes for Common name, genus and species, and a description field. You can use it to add a plant, or use the common name field for something else (I have one for "Garden Ideas", - in that case you can skip the fields you don't use.)

Now that we've covered creating an item, we're ready to start adding entries.

When you add an entry to an item, click on "Add" next to the item you created. You'll now do three to four quick steps:

1. Specify the date - it will default to today's date, but you can make it a date in the past or a date in the future (especially good for to-do's);

2. Label it as a status update, an action you performed, or a to-do item; and

3. Add details in the description field beneath that pull-down list (it says "Enter your update") to describe the to-do, or a status update, etc.

4. (Optional) - add a photo. In the same way you add a photo to a forum or the Plants Database, you can add a photo to each entry you make. This is especially nice for tracking a project's progress, a plant's growth, recording the changing seasons in your garden, or logging an idea you saw in someone else's garden.

(Hint: if you add a photo, be sure you add a caption at the time you add it. You can always go back in and edit the caption, but if you don't create one to begin with, you won't be able to add it to the photo later on :)

2. Regarding pasting other information into your journal, you can always use the tried and true "copy and paste" commands on your keyboard or Microsoft toolbar (check under "edit".)

My only cautions would be:

a) If you load too much stuff in there, you'll never find it (like my "favorites" links - it's almost impossible to find the one I want when I need it!); and

b) If you're copying stuff from other websites, you should pay heed to copyrights and at a minimum give proper credit. This goes double if you make your journal public - in essence, you've created a public webpage that can be viewed by anyone - including the author of that material :)

Thanks Go!
What's "RID"? Too late! Had started playing the other day, now on page 3-- how can I erase and start again?

You must have missed chat earlier where I admitted being an idiot :(

Voilabirdie:

STOP IT witht idiot stuff, OK?

NO ONE who is a paying member here could possibly be considered an idiot.

I have just resorted to aski8ng so many questiions offline... MS Terry who is a vols fan, is a saint, that is all!

And I enjoyed chatting with you last nite.

It was kinda cool to have fewer peeps there, at least we could follow a conversation.

Nope, hon, I just joined about 2 months ago.

I immediately got addicted and lost a lot of sleep being on
the DG site and reading as much as I cold, but I STILL havent seen everything.

But believe me, I wont miss the next roundup! As Justin Wilson would say "Ah Gay-ron-TEE!"

Glad I could help you.

I havent learned to scan stuff yet, but I am working on learning to download fotos to the PDB from CD's and diskettes.

You will see I managed to get one or two loaded and it took
all evening! O well, at least I am learning!

And now, after staying up watchin all the news, I am gonna
go catch a few ZZZZ's.

nite-nite! Hugs, Lavanda

lolol, no nominations for sainthood here, y'all. I enjoy using technology and love gardening. Dave gives us a place to do both, and if I can answer a few questions, I'm happy to help. (I think that could probably be said of most DG members - I just happen to spend a lot more time here than most people!)

Well, I finally found this thread! I really think there needs to be an easy way to find these instructions! I may be blind but I cannot find a HELP button anywhere on this site. There was one here wasn't there?

I had started a journal but quit updating it a while back when we moved. I went to work on it tonight and senility would not allow me to remember how to get past the first step. I Looked for instrucions and after a very long and roundabout search I finally found this thread. I really think the journal homepage should have a Help button to click on that would take us directly to an instruction sheet. This would help new members figure things out easier and allow me and my senile brain a quick refresher course when I forget!
