Hello everyone,
Our school computers have already connected with the internet by way of telephone dialing. So i figure out from now on i will have regular time to log in to meet you all,to say once or twice a week.
No SARS at all in the city which i am living from the beginning, and besides in most of the other areas SARS records is reducing to zero for a month.so our school permits us to go outside.a few days ago,i together with some of my kids went climbing the green-coveredd hills around our school.to my great excitedment,i found a kind of dwarf tree which is about 2 feet tall on the hillside.the trees are in full blossom, big pink flowers somewhat like camella's or azeala's.but i know at this season they do not belong the two.what on earth they are,i do not know.):
anyway,in late fall,i will replant some in the containers.
by the way,our gardening friend Sursula who is from the capital city Santiago,Chile, sent me some mystic seeds.i will share them to my kids, and have a contest to see whose seeds germinate best.and then let them plant in the big school garden.the landscape in our school is mainly made up of tropical trees, herbial flowers is scare.so Sursula's seeds is just in need.
Summer vocation is just around the corner.as a rule, the holiday begins from junly to september (totally 2 months).
some of school kids will go back home to meet their parents, some will be still remain at school, according to their own will,to take part in all kinds of school activities, such as camping, practising the piano, drawing pictures,swimming,roller-skating or learning english...i will stay with the school kids, helping them to practise oral english.
Is Jianhua missing?
I'm so glad that the sickness is about over and you and yours are all right.
I'm also glad that you are able to get on line and visit with us again.
I'll look forward to your descriptions of life far far away from here in Kentucky.
there are so many comments that i can hardly answer them one by one.please pardon me.
Sursula who is kind enough to send me the seeds uses the above english address of mine.it works very well.
Melody,second-hand magazines is my favorite.it will help me catch up with the changing of the english language, and learn many useful up-to-date expressions.to tell you the truth,so far i only ever read two flower books published in USA which was sent by kind Wantebegardener(i should thank her again here).Your kindness will get repay from me in the future.I am expecting reading your articles in the magazine.
and if possible,i will translate them into chinese, and send to the editorial of vegetable and flower magazine.):
Evert, what will you do during the long summer holiday?
I have a brief survey of my students.one says he will make some money by doing some odd job;one says she will design moveable cartons on computer;one says he will helps selling staff in his parents' grocery, and some say they will make full use of the leisure time to revise their textbook lessons, and some say they don't know what to do.it all depends on the situation...and the students who will still remain at school will take part in all kinds of school activities...during my holiday, besides the daily teaching tasks,i will finish reading the novel 'Anna Carenlina' by Leo Tolstyo(english version),and go outside of the campus to make friends with the flowers in the wild.
Meiyu,i have not heard of news about the package yet.but do not worry about it.i believe you.by the way,its right the time to use the green balm oil.open the lid and experience!
So good to hear you will be able to get onto the internet more often!
Our schools are also out for the summer now and many of the children will attend summer schools. My Grandaughter is taking summer courses to learn Spanish and French. She already speaks some Spanish, a little Navajo and sign language for the deaf. She is 13 and wants to be an interpreter for the United Nations when she is grown.
Please give my regards to your family.
I am on line now through our school computer network.
I will have regular time to be on line to chat with you
about gardening issues and the daily campus life
(but not politics or some other hot-burnt affairs.):)
Yes,the summer vocation may be the best time of year.
as soon as the final semester examination is over, some of the teenagers cannot help waiting for a few more days to go back to their home to meet their parents and friends.kids are kids just like impatients.
so good to hear from you again. Did you get my e-mail that I sent? I have some garden magazines laying here for you, I just need to get them mailed out.......lol
I just came from the Evancelic-Lutheran confirmation camp of mine, my confirmation will be June 6th in the old (medieval) Espoo Church. :)
Tomorrow we will go to Heinola (Norther from us, beautiful lake area), to celebrate the mid-Summer day with our friends. Only maybe 2 hours of the most dark time here right now.
July 13th we will go to a small journey visiting Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland & Slovakia with our car. It was so nice last year I want to do it again.
Evert....did you mean July 6th? Congratulations! And have a wonderful trip...post pictures! Jo
Yes July 6th, sorry.
I will, have to buy a new memory stick for my camera before it...
Evert, fine to hear that your summer vocation is so colorful and plentiful. This holiday i plan not to go outside travelling anyplaces, though i am now near to the seashore.i would like to go to hear the sea.only i have a teaching task -- during the course of the vocation,i will coach about 21 students oral english, who are still willing to stay at school.
Flowox, yes,i did get it,only a pity the email was mistakenedly deleted.you will get my response.
Jianhua,
I have not replied to this thread yet but find it very interesting!
I thought about our Chinese friends during the SARS outbreak, glad you and your family are safe.
I would be happy to send magzines & other things to you and your students. (please advise us of things that are not permitted!) Should we send to the above address?

It would be interesting to hear what is on the minds of your teenage students as to their social life. Your culture must be so different from ours!

Hello,Bunny,
I am also a bunny
(according to the 12 Chinese animal years):
Right, this Romanic address of mine works well.
one fantastic envelope ,which contains flower seeds
from our Chilean gardening friend Sursula,
has flown over the Pacific to me.
Magazines with pictures about campus life,
i feel, will be the best treat for me and mine.
I advise you not send me any VCD's,or magazines
on politics or adult's.
According to the South Daily,WHO has listed off
Guangdong as the 'SARS virus spreading region'.
yes,SARS is put off,but several hundred people
died from it innocently.it is said that the virus
carrier is some wild pig.a person ate the meat,
and caught the virus, and then relayed on and on.
Thank Goodness,SARS is gone, and folks here come back
to the past transquil life.
oh, my! i'm going to have to come back when i don't have to 'scan' through!!! hi jianhua!!!!!!! how are you???? did you get the book about japanese gardens and other gifts i sent? i'm so glad to see you're doing well!!!
Evert!!!!! whatsup, my favorite wonder-boy!! can you please email me? i have something i want to send to you, and am going to keep forgetting about it if you don't email me with your address...
jianhua, my aunt came to see us recently, and told me a lot about my family in china, but she doesn't suggest i use the time or money to get mama connected to them, as they were not particularly welcoming in years prior, and seem to rather be left alone. i do wonder, though, if there is a website or something to look up pictures and news articles and things in the old chinese papers to do geneology research? i found out that the story i was told about how my uncle ended up raised in china was not entirely correct, and have also found tidbits of info on my grandfather through the internet, but crave to learn more. do you have a suggestion to research this? my grandfather was important to the chinese communist government, send to japan before WWII, and now have his full name and other info. I heard there is a place that houses much geneology information about the "Lin" name somewhere...I'm almost sure it was where you lived before. Please email me when you can?
Hello again Jianhua. I have just been reading all of this that has been written since May. Wow, a long time, I don't know how I missed seeing it all this time. I'm glad to learn that your wife and son are able to be with you now to make your life more complete. Of course those lady teachers who wanted to do your laundry must have been very disappointed. Your plant hunting adventures on the nearby hillsides are giving you some physical and mental exercise, I hope you can get all the unknown specimens identified. Your comment about the noisy classroom made me smile. My husband says one of the best teachers he ever had taught history and his class was very noisy because he had the students reenacting the great battles of history. He still remembers a whole speech he had to memorize and recite as King Phillip of Spain. Students really learn a lot when they can be involved and have fun learning so it is no surprise that you are excelling in this job. It is nice to see that you are able to be online again, hope to see you soon. Happy teaching!
Ah, well everyone...Jianhua, is very busy...and he has not been able to go to the net bar as often as before...Now ...the classes are changing again..and he hopes to go back to visit his home with his family for a month...He is going to turn his computer on in his home..so maybe he can find us again. Yes we all miss him. I hope we all can hear again from him soon. I am sure he will tell us all about what is going on...hehehehe.....smiles...from him again would be very nice....
Diana
Thank you for the update Diana. Do you know the dates when he would be away from the school? I hope to see him here soon.
No Mary E, I do not know..But if I hear something I will let everyone know...heheh Life does not always go as one might plan....I heard from him on the 10th...He was still in Chaozhou, Guangdong that night. So we will see...
Smiles~~~~~~~~
Diana
Hello friends
Long time no see.
truly,miss you guys very much.
These few months,i am busy in teaching --
nowaday, learning english in China is just like a
typhon spread over the land, kids from kindergarden are required to speak english, advanced learning strategies is of great importance.in order to keep paces with the times,
i am try to experience teaching english in english in an interactive ways and in a pleasant learning environment.
The experience is effective.and besides,i am learning to teach via Hi-tec that is via computer multiple media.
Busy as I am,life is full of meaning.
I am considering to change school next school semester.
A bilingual school (english-chinese) in Dongguan has the intention of asking me to teach enhanced oral english class in the school.
So i conclude the life in this period --a person sailing on the sea, survival and development are two main threads for me.anyway,so far so good.
Thanks for your concern of me.Maybe in the winter vacation i together with my wife and son go back to my hometown to see my big family.by then i will use my own computer to chat with you more.
see you!
Jianhua, how wonderful to hear from you again. You sound like a very dedicate teacher...of which we could use more of in this world! How about some pictures of you, your family....even your school and students. Jo
Thanks for the update Jianhua, as usual you are a very busy man. Kindergarteners learning English in China will make a big change in the country since children learn everything so fast and easily. I see that as a teacher your grasp of English has given you a very big advantage and has put you into a unique position. Multimedia presentations will be very helpful. What age group will you be teaching there? How far away will your next job be from your home and from where you are teaching now? When does that next semester begin? I hope you will be able to have your family with you again if you go to the new school.
good to hear from you Jinhua = Hope you can spend time with your Big family.
I just saw the update from you Jianhua. It's good to hear from you! We're praying God guides your steps and continues to give you His joy. :)
jianhua, you're the coolest!
Hello Jianhua! I am new to DG, only been a subscriber 1 month now and have enjoyed reading this thread. Something I heard here locally made me think of you and decide to reply. Sioux Center, IA is just 30 miles from me and recently they lost a young child to the 'flu'. The bug this year has been nasty and others have died from it. What made me think of you is the fact that now the doctors are looking at the possibility that it was a SARS death as the child was adopted from China just 2 months ago. My husband also heard that right now there are around 75 people quarantined in China for SARS. It is reported to be linked to a doctor who was working with the virus and was contaminated and he contaminated others. Have you heard anything about this in your area? I don't think we have seen the end of SARS. Do you? Best regards, kooger

Hello dears all,
so excited to see this thread keep rolling on.
i have come back home for the winter vacation.
next school semester i will be working in a new school either in Nanjing or Ningbo(two big cities in the southeast China),and if possible,my son and my wife will follow me there.
Roadrunner,i remembered that when i sent healthcaretea to Wantabegardener earlier last year i enclosed my 2003 photo in the envelope.i will email her soon to take trouble to have it shown here, heheheh.
Kooger, sorry to hear the flu news.this year's SARS seems lost its last year's craziness.though several suspected sars cases have been reported by the orthority media, there arises no horror.people can be seen walking in the streets and working at positions as usual.
Meiyu,i did have a cool experience recently.while trying to find my new job in the city of Suzhou (one of the most beautiful cities in china),i found a guy in his 30s in the railway station, who called himself CHUCK.During our hours' conversations in english,i found he was from Ohio.he has been in China teaching english in a university for a couple of years. He commented that i speak english clearly and naturall and there will be no language problem if i go to the usa.hehehehe his praise greatly encourages me.
MaryE,if you ask a chinese student the question"what knowledge is the most valuable?'most of them will reply"english" With china's entrance to WTO,and hosting the 2008 Olimpic Games in Beijing and the rapid spread of the internet, english is becoming more and more important.in China if a person holds an english cerfication such as PET(china's public english test),US's Tofel or Uk's Ielts,it means that you hold a cardK.you will get a good job, promation,or chance to go abroad...so under such circumstance,i being an english teacher, will not worry about losing my foodbowl.
Pebble, yes,i will spend time with my BIG family.due to being absent for some time here,i may miss some information.and if i owe you something, please let me know.
Jianhua@ (((((((((hugs)))))))))))
Gardenwife, yes,GOD really tend this humble lamb as the sheperd.at that time,i found myself almost lick the dust.it's HIM who take me out of egypt and lead me into a land with milk and honey.
Jianhua, it is so good to hear from you again. I have missed seeing your post but understand you are very busy.
I know you are so proud to be back home for while and get to see your extended family again.
Take care and hugs.
Ruth

Jianhua, It sounds like you are doing well and that your return to the cities is an honor to you. I will pray that your lovely family will be able to join you soon.
Oh, Jianhua! It's so good to see a post from you. I can't imagine being away from Howie for long periods of time, and know your separation from your family must be difficult; I'm praying, too, that God will provide a way for you to be together. That's such a nice picture of you all - a fine family.
Hello again Jianhua. You are a busy man, thank you for taking the time to let all of us know what is happening in your life. The picture of your family is very nice, your son looks so much like you and your wife is a very pretty lady. I do hope they will be able to follow you to where you will be teaching in the future, it is so important for a family to be able to be together even if it is not at your own home. I can emagine how excited you must have been to be able to talk to somebody who could tell you that your English is very good! That must have given you a very big encouragement that will be long lasting. The Olympic games will be very good for your country, I hope you will be able to go see them. I especially admire your gymnastic teams! Keep in touch with us at DG, we enjoy your posts very much. God is certainly guiding your life.
Hehehe i confirm the silly man right here in the picture is the guy our gardening friends wanted for long.for the other two,you can easily make out,one is the other half of mine Jade, one is my son Hope. When i was working in a public school ten years ago,my collegues called me "Little Zhang"(Zhang is my family name),while now i am called "Old Zhang"Time and tide waits for no man.
LOL, isn't that the truth! Howie made a bad pun when I told him this: "Ah, for Auld Zhang Syne". Happy new year! ;)
Oh, or better yet, it's the
Auld Zhang Line. ;)
