Poor Ned, the end of the adventure

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Many of you followed the adventures of Poor Ned, our young male border collie, whose pot eating, trench digging, plant scattering ways left him in trouble up to his neck most of the time. Ned died last night of internal blood loss, cause unknown. May, his young female companion has spent all day looking for him. Sadie, our older dog who appears to be carrying his one and only litter, has spent the day in the hay pile that they shared. We will all miss Ned, but me especially. Now, I have to go through this all over again!

Kathleen, my prayers are with you in your grief. Your pain is the pain of love. Let your memories of Ned, the mischief maker, replace your tears of sorrow with tears of laughter.

Kathleen and Stan....I'm so sorry to hear about Ned. Jo

I'm sorry to hear that Kathleen.
A dog is also a part of the family, and to lose your pet is very hurting.
Ned, though, has left a litter of wee ones, which you will have soon, then you'll at least have part of him back again.

All the best.

Dear Kathleen, just looking at Ned's picture makes me want to give him a big hug. What a precious dog and I'm so sorry for his loss. Losing a pet is like losing one of your children. My heart breaks with you and I send you many many hugs. Please know that Ned is safe in God's front yard. God bless you!

All pets, large and small, are a part of a family unit. My deepest heartfelt thoughts are with you and yours. (((hugz)))

I am so very sorry to read this news, Kathleen, and am praying for you, May and Sadie to be comforted. Few experiences are as wrenching as the loss of a beloved animal companion and I pray for every day to bring you all a greater measure of peace and solace. God bless you.

I'm saddened to learn that you have lost a beloved companion. I know that the emotional bond between a dog and people can be complex, intimate, marvelously satifying, leaving an empty space behind when the dog passes on.

Ned was obviously a wonderful character, who leaves you with many treasured memories.

There is a doggie heaven.

Adam.

Kathleen

I'm so sorry to hear about Ned, I hope he had a peaceful passing.

Thank you all, so much. Needless to say, this was a blow Stan didn't really need, having lost his dad not so long ago.

For those new to the site, and the adventures of Ned, he was not only our pet, but a working herd dog who, going into his second year was just coming into his talents (considering Sadie's present state, he had at least one of them figured out). When we lose a dog, it's on at least two levels, friend and partner.

He's back in the woods now with those that went before him, and come April, he will have spring beauties rising up over him.

Oh, Kathleen! My heart's with you guys - so, so sorry about Ned. :(

Kathleen I'm so sorry for your loss.

Oh Kathleen, I am so sorry to hear about poor Ned! I hope his grieving mate will find comfort in her new litter, and that you will find comfort in knowing that poor Ned is not in pain. We will miss him, almost as much as you.

I'm so sorry Kathleen. I know how sad you must feel. I lost my 16 yr old mini dachshund last Sunday. Her two sons have looked for her everyday and it is heartbreaking to watch. As Adam said there will always be treasured memories.

Kathleen, I'm so sorry to hear this latest blow to your family. As others have said, losing a beloved pet is like losing a family member. For you it is also a working partner who is much needed on a farm. I pray you will be comforted and perhaps one of his children will be able to replace him in the work arena tho never in your hearts.

Kathleen,
There's just something about a Border Collie, isn't there?
We miss our old BC Fred, terribly.
He was from a farm that used "working dogs", too.
Your Ned looks like he was a great dog.
A big hug to you and your family.
Melissa

I am so saddened to hear about Ned's passing. I remember Cala and Carol and Jo coming to visit and telling me about 'Poor Ned'. I have also seen the pictures! :) He has left you many fond memories and now his children. Hopefully spring coming and the new puppies will help you to keep your chins up. Hopefully the pots in doggie heaven are too big to flip and the beds are surrounded by heavy duty fencing.
Love and hugs,
Michele

This poem was sent to me a while ago, I don't know the title or the author, but I thought I would share it.

I will lend to you for awhile a puppy,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
Or maybe for a day or two or three.
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care of him for me?

Should his stay be brief
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise that he will stay,
since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

But should I call him back
much sooner than you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand.
