Ice storm predicted for tomorrow

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

We've got 23" from yesterday/last night on top of the 6" from Saturday. And it's not supposed to stop until this afternoon. There was a lot of sleet mixed in last night so that helped to cut down the totals.

We actually had travel suspended yesterday afternoon until this morning on all state roads. Was a 1000.00 fine if you were caught trying to drive.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

This is not our norm here in VA. The worst storm in about 20 years. It's falling pure ice right now and don't know how the poor birds and critters are going to deal with it. I went out this morning briefly and felt as though my face had been cut. But I know many of you are having a worse time of it and I'm really sorry. Some folks have lost all power, water, land phone, heat and are completely cut off It's not fun, just plain misery. Shoe, I have a feeling you might be wearing fuzzy slippers!! Now there's a thought!! :-)

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

wahhhh! I wanna see snow...Yall be careful. I saw all the problems on the news this a.m. brrr, it looked cold. BE SAFE EVERYONE!

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

We had about a quarter inch of ice on the cars when we woke up yesterday. Then we got a dusting of snow, and more sleet/freezing rain. I checked the gauge and we received 1.75 inches of precipitation in the past 24+ hours, but because of a warm front we were spared. According to a guide I have from the Old Farmer's Almanac - 1 inch of water equals 10 inches of regular snow, 4-5 inches of wet snow, and 15 inches of dry snow. I hope everyone makes it through this storm okay, without a loss of power, and that it's the last storm we all have this winter so we can start gardening again soon.

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

By now everyone knows how much I love snow. Hubby and I were in northern PA from Friday evening until yesterday afternoon riding our snowmobiles. Driving home wasn't too bad but roads were snow covered. As of then we had about 4-6" of fresh snow here near Pittsburgh, PA. Then this morning we had at the very least 12" of NEW snow with drifts of 18"+ in other areas.

Welcome to winters is beautiful Pennsylvania.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Talked to Mystic, she has no power, no cable, no water and no INTERNET!! Sccreeaaaam! She made it to work today, said the roads are not too bad but the snow is coming down. Hopefully she will get sent home early.
Snowed and iced in here. Nothing to see outside but white, white, white! Ice for two days, now snow. Bleck.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Well blow me down and she phoned me and asked me not to mention this!!! Just like her, what!!!!!

Well I for one have had enough of this snow. I haven't ventured outside yet but soon. We have about 15" so far and the news says the worst is yet to come. The governor has declared a state of emergency. They're expecting flooding along the coast. I hope everyone stays safe and sound.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

hey gang, I am at work and will try to stay in touch as much as I can here as long as the computers stay up here. If you try to email me and I don't respond its because I have no internet or power at home. Thanks goodness for cell phones. lol I am hanging in there just fine! Hope everybody else is getting along ok too!

markleysburg, PA(Zone 5a)

Garrett County MD which is next door has reported 49 inches of snow with 30 ft drifts. It is always the worse are in any storm. It is in the western MD mountains right on the PA WVA border

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

PA also has been declared state of emergency. Oh, I wish I had my sled. I could go on any road I wanted to and I could take you anywhere you wanted to go. lol :) I feel for the folks who simply can't handle this much snow. All in all we're doing very well here in Western PA.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yeah Margaret, seems like she might have said something like that to me too. But that is why I am the BAD seed. LOL

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

My prayers are with everyone who was hit hard by this storm. Somehow, we got very lucky in my area of the western NC mountains. The weekend forecast was 3-5" or more of rain (my basement always floods when it rains like that) with much of it in the form of ice and sleet.

As it happened, we seemed to be in a void and while everyone around us was hit hard, we got less than 1/2" of ice, and no loss of power. There's enough ice to keep everyone at home today, and my small truck in the driveway too. No way José could my trucklet climb the short hill out of my driveway when it's icy, LOL.

Right now the birds are busy at most of the feeders, although the niger seed socks look frozen solid. Rain and above freezing temps are forecast for later this afternooon so maybe we'll be thawed out by tomorrow.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Mercy, y'all. The last time I saw a single snowfall that could be measured in double digits, was over 20 years ago, when I was living in Colorado.

Here we had toad strangling rains on Friday and Saturday, and we got sleet (no sneet like Mel) yesterday evening.
I *think* we're supposed to be back up to 50 by tomorrow, so I won't complain one bit.

Hope everyone is safe, sound and warm!!!!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, we made it through the storm. Got about 18" total here. But what on earth do I do with any more that comes? Already it is piled about 5' high all along the driveway and walks. Most of it comes back down onto the drive when I put more on it! And yes, the piles are about 10' across. What do y'all do, who live where this is normal?

To think I spent all weekend shoveling. And it SHOULD have been shoveling dirt, not snow! *sighing for spring

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Howie shoveled the walkway up to the door and was just getting ready to shovel the driveway when, like an angel, there she came. She offered to clear off the driveway for him. She's our snow angel. We have a resident on our street who routinely uses her snowblower to clear off the sidewalks on both sides of the street.

Later, I heard another snowblower chugging along and looked out the window to see our next-door neighbor was out doing the sidewalk and he also cleaned the driveway for us.

What a blessing those two were! See?

Lupinelover: When you live in snow country, there are some rules of thumb.

1. Never place your outside door where the roof empties snow or you can't get in or out.

2. Always leave empty areas where you can plow the snow. The push piles can be over 8-10 ft high by spring.

3. Use metal roofing so that snow slides better. If the snow doesn't slide off your roof, you'll have to climb up there and scoop it off!

4. NEVER have flat roofs on your buildings, and make sure the pitch is steep enough for the snow to slide.

5. As a courtesy, never plow snow onto a neighbors property or block access to the road, or pile snow at intersections and block visibility.

6. Plow unto others as you would have others plow unto you.

GW that's so nice of your neighbors. My snow angel was a man in a pay loader. I've taken some pictures but I'll have to get them developed. I have the same thing growing in my window boxes too. :)

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Kim, WOW! that sure looks cold from where I am sitting. I wish I were there..btw..LOVE the pic you sent me...LOL!!!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Hi all you people that are covered with snow. Hope your storms are about over. Now hope doesn't get too warm too fast and cause flooding. That's what my daughter in Fairfax VA is hoping. I think they went to work today. We are so lucky here in WA, no snow and beautiful weather. Hope you all survive. Donna

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It's supposed to be in the 40's Friday and rain! :P

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

IT IS SNOWING HERE AGAIN!!!! WAH HA HA HA HAHA!!!! If it weren't for all the seeds I just started, I am sure I would go absolutely nuts! Anybody got more seeds???????

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

We've got the toad choaking rain again...and lots of it.It's over the roads in places and creeks are out of their banks. We didn't get the ice and snow like mystic did. She's on the opposite side of the state and much farther North...just a skin of 'black ice' and a little sneet on Sunday.I'm thankful all of this isn't white...but wish it'd let up!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Sneet, Mel? LOL. I have a cold, so I have slot. ;)

On local TV they say we're supposed to get ice and more snow this weekend, but the Weather Channel's website doesn't agree. Oh, who knows.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've got no snow and lots of seeds, Badseed! Maybe you should climb on a plane and come up to Alaska and help me sow all these seeds in flats!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Well,Kim,there's a fine line between all of the variations of solid percipitation. We all know about snow.Soft and fluffy.Snain is wet, splooshey snow.Sneet is frozen pellets that sting when they hit you.Regular sleet comes down icy and has very little white coloration.Sneet will bulid up like snow, but is hard little balls of white.

Hope I've made myself clear as mud...or,uh...sneet.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I thought the pellets were snail...Or is that the sneet that leaves slimy trails down your face?

;) Thanks for the explanation there, Mel! :D
