After months of waiting my brug's first bloom has opened. I was pretty sure it was my pink vulcanicola but knew too that it could also be my yellow queen. I had planted them up in gallon pots last summer and they fell over. My DH to be helpful, picked them up and took the 2 name tags and placed them together on the side. So I had to go by memory of what the 2 plants each looked like. So it is one of 2 choices:
B. SANGUINEA ‘YELLOW QUEEN’ - Bright yellow trumpet flowers adorn this cool growing Andean species. Soft dark green foliage. 50356 $9.50
B. VULCANICA - New. Large pink flowers with deeper pink stripes. Cool growing Sanguinea type, dark green foliage. Will not tolerate temperatures above 90°F. 50358 $10.00
So you tell me which one it is! Doesn't look like either to me! LOL
NOTE: the plant was frosted last week and the tops of all the branches have frost damage!
A MYSTERY!!!
What a neat close up~ I like it, but agree it doesn't look like either of the descriptions you have down.
Kell well theres also Inca Princess which is yellow too...but this has a little more peach to it..Inca Princess is a bright clear yellow.Maybe its a new sport??LOL Maybe?
Will you tell us where you got them from?
Doesn't look like either of them to me. Might have to let it bloom a couple more times to see the real color.
I was thinking the same thing,it might just be the winter color and will show its true color in the summer.....
Well, Kell, whatever it is I wouldn't throw it out. LOL
Very pretty (o:
Very pretty Kell!!!
Its very pretty, Kell. It could have vulcanicola genes.
I like it Kell. Great photo! Maybe it will change as days go by. Keep us posted.
Thanks for your opinions all! I am disappointed........I like bolder colors. If it is a sport Kyle and special because of that, I know just who to give it to.
I bought them from Kartuz Gloria. Very odd....... I had my heart set on the pink one! for my pepto garden.....LOL
Kyle, which is better.......bigger & brighter........inca princess or yello queen? do you know?
Well, I still have one more vulcanicola that had buds a month ago but fell off. That one I got in a nursery in Occidental. It looks totally different than the 2 I got from Kartuz.
Thanks Kell. I wondered if it might be from Kartuz. I have ordered from them, they have such good descriptions of colors, blooms, etc.
Whatever it turns out to be, it is pretty. Doesn't look like it will change to pink tho', so ten bucks down the drain?
If not Jeanne and it turns out to be little different as Kyle was hoping, I was thinking your friend might adopt it. I have no room for it as it looks now.........:((
I am not even sure this is the vulcanicola. Though Monika thinks it could be. It is odd it has that darker stripe around the rim. the Yellow Queen should be all yellow and the pink vulcanicola should be pink with stripes but I believe they go the long way down the body of the bloom. I wish my other one from Kartuz would bloom. I should go out and look for buds. I guess I will order another from him.............. I want to see the pink bloom one in person. I do not even care if I keep it really........I just want to see it for myself. LOL
Looks great to me. Of course, I've not had any luck growing sangs yet, so this would be my next challenge. Hope you will hang on to it until you get warmer weather. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Kell, I have both the 'vulcanica' and yellow queen from Kartuz. It looks to me to be the vulcanica by leaf shape. I emailed Kartuz, they said vulcanica was actually a pink B. vulcanicola. But that was last spring, they haven't fixed their listing yet, maybe they are confused?
The yellow queen may have a virus, I have mine seperate. Some leaves are deformed. It may also be a earlier mite infection.
If you can post photos of it's leaves flat, I can be sure. Do you still have YQ? I was hoping the vulc to be "pure", but the fuzzy leaves don't seem right.
Now that is pink- are you playing with us Kell? Or is it really pink? If so - make up the spare room - I'm on my way. I'll bring dessert.
Kell, That's definately the "Vulcanica" from Kartuz, mine has the same leaves. I'm thrilled that I have one! So it started orange and turned pink eh? I'm surpised, but I haven't owned a pink sang/vulc yet, VERY very interesting.
The "yellow queen" that I have, and also from the person mine is from, have mutant leaves and don't look healthy. I think it's going to the trash in the morning. It's from a very reputable trader, I think Kartuz should be warned that their YQ is likely virused.
So Dennis, will you take a pic of the leaves before you toss it?
Excuses excuses I know, but I am not ready to step into the world of computer cameras. I need a scanner for my real camera!
If I can ever drag Liz or Jeanne over here, I'll have to make them bring their cameras over and take pics of everything and post it for me. LOL.
How about I just keep YQ in a sheltered area away from all brugs, and watch it, and I'll let you know, and if I end up using the camera I'll post a pic. There is something wrong with it though, which is a shame because it takes cuttings quite well.
I thought Preissel said that if it were virused cuttings would not root?
I think it's pretty. Think it is time to order me one.
I've heard they won't root also, which doesn't explain why I have never lost a x knightii LOL. It is my best rooter.
Wow...this is one of the Vulcanicola's I have...I can't wait for it to flower!
Kell have you got a side shot of it?
Which way Liz? See the 3rd picture up? Isn't that a side shot? or do you want a closer up side shot?
Well yes - I guess it is. LOL.
Have you made up my room yet?
Only if you promise to clean when you get here.........LOL................I need someone as organized as you to get me together here.
See,you still have more stuff to add to that pepto garden!!
See - Jeanne loves it. That means we're both coming down. LOL
LOL. I am going to try to root it ........... I might have already........... i have a bunch of cuttings out in the hoophouse.....i lost about half........ with the fungus gnats!
I have a product that I'm tentatively recommending for FG. Brugie tells me that you have it down there - Bug-B-Gone Pure Solutions, Indoor/Outdoor Insect Dust. It's 79.5% diatomaceous earth and .2% pyrethrins. I used it on Saturday and I keep whapping the pots and nothing seems to be flying up. Please remember that I said 'tentatively recommending' - but I'm pleased so far. Fingers crossed xx
And anything with the DE means that the bugs will not develop a resistance.
