This photo was taken via satellite, on a cloudless day. Note how the lights are already on in Holland , Paris, and Barcelona, and how it's still
daylight in London, Lisbon , and Madrid. The sun is still shining on the Straight of Gibraltar, and the Mediterranean Ocean is
already in darkness. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you can see the Azores Islands;below them to the right, the Madeira
Islands; a bit below them the Canary Islands; further south, close to the furthest western point of Africa, the Cape Verde Islands.
Note how the Sahara is huge and can be seen clearly both during daytime and nighttime. Morocco is quite green and the bright
light is in SW Libya or SE Algeria . To the left, on top,
is Greenland, totally frozen.
cool photo
that is an awesome sight!!! very cool, thanks pebble.
Ha, you can even see Finland there. Funny how much lighter Finland is compared to some East European and African countries, as the population here is much smaller.
Pebble, you have such an enviable grasp of world geography. If I had seen this photo without your explanation, I would have been lost as a goose. Heck, a map of downtown Georgetown, Texas is a challenge for me!
Evert,You can post this picture when people say they want to see you smiling,Just say see there I am!I'm waving too!LOL
What a great shot Pebble!can you say where it came from?NASA Site?

Aimee, you would not have been....some of the countries are pretty well defined...I wish the photo had been more daylight to the east, and not so much over the ocean....
Have a look http://www.cs.hut.fi/~mox/world-at-night/earthlights2_dmsp_big.jpg
You can easily spot some capitals and big cities in Europe, Paris, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Madrid, London (oh well), etc.
And look at Africa, and Egypt. The Nile bank-area is really the most populated area in there..
And Russia, are those roads or what? Or somekind of Soviet city building (in lines ;)).
Tibet, no lights..
USA - people really seem to like the Eastern part better :}
Nothern Canada is without lights.
Novaja Zemlja, no lights, only nuclear waste :] (haha)

Evert, yes, that is something else, isnt it? where is Novaja Zemlja? does it glow??
Novaja Zemlja is North East of Finland, the long dark island. Soviet Union had some nuclear bomb tests there, and sad but true, they have "thrown" their nuclear waste in the bottom of the sea there and some other parts of the country, and they also store it there above the ground.

I found "The Page". I've been there before too. You can see "online" where the sun shines and where it's night. And when the darkness comes over your place :]

Oh, my gosh - I've never seen satellite photos showing the light and darkness. How amazing to have such a perspective available like this. Wow.
That is cool,go under it and get into Living Earth,it has one that fades from night to day,
