PDB Challenge Winners and Totals!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Please join me in extending hearty congratulations, kudos and huge thanks to the 195 members who participated (wittingly, unwittingly or otherwise!) in our first-ever mid-winter PDB challenge!!!

Despite some technical difficulties late in the month, we checked off a whopping 20,439 checkboxes, and added 1,512 new comments between Jan. 1 and Feb. 3 - wow!

The winners of the challenge are as follows:

Jody, who checked off a whopping 5,989 checkboxes!!!

Mystic, who added an amazing 344 new comments!!!

I'd also like to recognize the following individuals who worked many hours to add a tremendous amount of valuable information to the Plants Database during the challenge:

Lupinelover (2,307 checkboxes & 277 comments)
PoppySue (849 checkboxes & 49 comments)
Baa (775 checkboxes & 54 comments)
HummerRachel (400 checkboxes and 26 comments)
Floridian (225 checkboxes)
Weezingreens (150 checkboxes & 15 comments)
Melody (142 checkboxes & 12 comments)
yvana (136 checkboxes & 2 comments - and many new photos!)
ButterflyGardner (107 checkboxes & 33 comments)

As promised, we also threw every participant's name in a virtual hat for a random drawing (as always, each item you submitted increased your odds of winning.) Congratulations to MaVieRose, who won won the random drawing!

Excellent work, everyone! I hope we'll all continue the momentum, and add to the PDB as we have time, inclination and information. Be sure to use the "Report an Error" button whenever something needs an editor's attention. And take good notes and photos this spring and summer; the 3rd annual August PDB challenge will be here before we know it!

Remember: the PDB is only as complete, accurate and useful as we make it!

Excellent work!

A gigantic Congratulations to Jody and Mystic and to all the other 195 contributors that have helped to achieve this. Many thanks for all your work this past month and hopefully in time to come too!

Seems I've lost the top slot as to the comments, I must have been slacking off ;)

There is, however, one name not on that list above. Anyone who glanced at the new entries on the PDB this past month will know that Vols herself has made a significant contribution in this contest too.

You can't get away with it Vols *G* you deserve to be up there too. Thanks for all your hard work and encouragement.

Did we have a competition for the people who reported the most errors ;)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Wow! I'm amazed at the totals! Makes me feel like a real slacker! And all the time people were filling in the blanks and putting in comments, the new entries and photographs were pouring in too! Good work, everybody!

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

Baa and Vols were a tremendous help too!!! As errors/corrections were reported one or the other were very quick to respond.

Thanks to both of you!!!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Amazing..congrats to all of you!
Cheers,
Carol

Crossville, TN

All of you did a fantastic job. Jo

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I have to say thank you too...the veggie section got lots of attention and many people helped with giving our edible plants more information in the last month. Great Job!

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Great job Jodie, Mystic and all the rest!!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Wow...good work everyone!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Congrats everyone! Thanks for all your hard work. As for me, I realize I tend to USE the PDB more than contribute as much as many of you, but I guess we're all winners since its creation!
As for winners, I bet Jody did more that just put in checkboxes and, knowing Mystic, I bet she put in more than just Comments! (The scores above make it look like that's "All" they did while everyone else offered multiple areas of input.) Do those numbers not come up?
(I'm the curious sort, ya know) :>)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Indeed, mystic and Jody were #1 and #2 in both categories, (after I removed my own checkboxes, at least.) I thought about adding both numbers to their information, but it made it kind of confusing - at least it confused me as I was writing and previewing the post, lolol!)

Without going back into the data to get exact numbers, I can say with certainty that Jody contributed more than 300 comments, and Mystic checked off 3,000-some checkboxes. (I'd imagine the letters are wearing smooth off their keyboards and their right hands are permanently curved to fit a mouse!)

Thanks again to all who contributed, and I hope your efforts will inspire other DG members to get involved with the PDB!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hah...*chuckle*...I can just see humankind of the future with curled right hands!

Whewww! Lots of work everyone did. A labor of love for sure. Thanks!

Stone Mountain, GA(Zone 7b)

I would also like to thank baa, govols, poppysue, and weezingreens for their help and guidance with my submissions. They make the Plants Database the fun and informative resource that it is.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks everybody did a great job and we all benefit from it. I have to agree Terry, Baa and Poppysue did a great job as editors. Just because the contest is over, it doesn't mean you have to stop working in the database. Great job everybody!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Way to go everyone!!!!

Yes, my hand did get temporarily mouse-shaped too ;D

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

Great job everyone!
What is a check box?
I have used the PDB, but can't say I ever saw a check box.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Terry, this might have to go to Dave for an answer, but something I have been wondering about:

Out of the 55,000 plants listed in the PDB, how many have many categories of unchecked boxes now? So many plants have multiples checked that I cannot tell if there are still huge numbers of plants that have little or no information. Those are the ones that I tried to target, but I had no way to easily find out which ones were which (until the Mel pointed us to the poor neglected veggies).

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Lupinelover: I think that's what it's all about. Finding the place where help is needed and plugging away at it. I spent my time in the PDB correcting typos.... not very exciting, buy it needs to be done... and some of the typos were my own! It's a year 'round job, but the challenge makes it interesting.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

thank you everyone, you do a fantastic job and more and more times i'm on a search engine, dave's garden is there for all.

Congratulations to our winners and many thanks to all!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Weez, yeah, I found several typos of mine, too ;) Also plants that I entered a little about at the time, and figured I would update them when I had a chance to research them! You are right, having the challenge was the incentive I needed to get down to it.

Do you know I started DREAMING that I was working in the PDB? Maybe one reason I slowed down a little toward the end. AAAAaahhh! Trapped in the database! *grin*

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

What a picture, Lupinelover! Stumbling around the database, and the only way out is the Error report window!
