Storing Amaryllis

Albany, MO(Zone 5a)

A friend from Texas sent me 20 large Amaryllis bulbs. I want to plant them outside in Spring so I must store them until March or April in my zone 5a. What is the best way to keep them from drying out? They are in a baggie type bag in a cool closet. Will the baggie cause them to mildew?

Thanks for you help.

I think you should let them breathe a bit, so dont tie the baggie up tight, leave it open. I've stored ours right in their pots and put them in the well-house. We don't put them in the ground here. I don't believe they're gonna be hardy in your area either so you'll have to dig them up this fall.

Moss Rose, I have about 25 amaryllis bulbs that I keep from year to year. They aren't hardy here either. I usually keep them in pots all year. Put outside after danger of frost in a semi-shaded place. I apply Osmocote a couple of times a year. In the early fall maybe late Aug. I pull the pots out of ground and tip on side so they don't get watered until frost time , then bring back into house and water. If they haven't developed at least 4 leaves they won't bloom. I put 3 or so bulbs in large pots, 10", and usually one bulb in a 5 to 7" pot. More than half of my 25 bloomed by Christmas or shortly thereafter, only one in bloom now. rutholive (Donna)

Thanks for your tips. I've never planted them outside, only in pots, but thought I'd give it a try. I have a special place for them in the garden so I can easily dig them in the fall.

MossRose, one year I planted our 3 amaryllis bulbs outside in the ground, after they had flowered indoors in the winter. Didn't seem to matter to them, but normally they stay in their pots, inside and out.

I also would get them out of the plastic bag. Keep bulbs stored in peat moss in paper bags is my rule. Never had mold or mildew problems that way.
