Hardware upgrade today

If all goes well, I will be upgrading our server's hardware today to a completely new machine. This may cause some downtime during the actual switchover.

FYI

Dave

Well, the upgrade is complete. That didn't hurt all that bad. Is everyone here?

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

Did something happen last night? I tried all night (East coast) to get on and couldn't! I started getting paranoid and erased all my cookies and everything! Totally cleaned up the ol girl.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

It went off on me last while I was viewing a post. Wasn't on yet at 7 AM CST. Came right up now.

The upgrade was a disaster, and in fact, we're back to running the old hardware again. The new hardware ran for quite a while (a day?) before it crashed last night - and it crashed hard.

It was down for 12 hours, until this morning I was able to reset the machine and bring it back online. I quickly put the old hardware back in (which is slower, but at least it doesn't crash).

The new hardware will be sent back to mwave.com (from whom I bought it).

This afternoon I purchased new equipment from a local computer company, and am currently working to configure and test that. This new server will be put through much more rigourous testing before I upgrade DG again.

dave

Dave, it's so maddening when new equipment not only fails to perform as promised, but actually makes matters worse. Thank you for explaining what happened, and I hope that mwave honors your business by making this right.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the quick response! Hope it all goes well next time!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

As usual, I just thought it was the old system I use, so I gave up and left it until now. How odd to come here and learn it wasn't my dinosaur at all. I came here first, though, hoping to find something like this. Yippeee!

(Zone 5a)

Good luck with getting it straighten out.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks a million Dave! What ever the speed, it has always been faster than 95% of the net.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

This is strange: At this time, going forward is fairly fast, but using the 'Back' arrow is very slow. Other websites are acting normal though.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

sumtin appen ast nighdt boss? Er d'I not spayell raight agin?

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

I'm sorry for the extra work and all, Dave. I know how frustrating it can be. Thanks for letting me know about my issues... Kind and praying regards for the next upgrade :)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Wow, this is even weirder: Now going back is lightening fast AND it refreshes the page as well! It never did this before, although I always had it set up to do that.
Hail Dave!

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Dave I can only imagine the headaches this caused you and I'm truly sorry. I read this somewhere - "When you aim for perfection, you discover it's a moving target". :-) I truly didn't know how much this site meant to me until I was forced to do without it. A million thanks - and more!!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Ditto!!!!

Rapid City, SD(Zone 5b)

Thanks for all your work on the site Dave - we love DG soooo much!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Remember when it wasn't uncommon to be told something had to wait, the computers were down? So we just knew we had no choice. It could last for hours or days. I'm well trained, and I accept the delay or being unable to go where I want to go. Here, the wait is usually brief, and we are even told why it must be. Thanks, DG staff.

Louisa, what a marvelous quote! Am going to remember that one, it's so true. And I echo what you said about DG. Thanks go to Dave and all those helping him for a friendly, informative and special site.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Thanks dave.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

I am new to Dave's Garden, but not new to Gardening clubs. But I have been in network support for a co-lo facility before and some servers would be fine forever, but some constantly had trouble. I hope it doesn't continue to give issues.

Its the people here that I'm here for anyway! I just happen to be awake and surfing when most people do their server maint. Except during the crash last week and this past Monday night when no page would load, I've never had any problems with a page loading slow. Old or new hardware-maybe I am patient-well no, no one has ever said that of me.

Monaca, PA(Zone 5b)

I am a new member and I find everything about this site fascinating!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)
