If anyone comes across a Hortus Third (paperback, hardback, used, doesn't matter as long as it's still legible and usable) for less than $50 please let me know - I'll be glad to pay the postage to ship it from anywhere you might find it.
(I knew I should have bought the Barnes & Noble special edition last year - $35 for a two-book set, argh. I was certain I could pick up a used copy cheaper on eBay, but I haven't yet....sigh.)
Looking for Hortus
And if you find two, I am next in line!
Woohoo! I managed to pick up a copy of Hortus Third tonight on eBay for $46 plus postage.
Aimee, I did find this book source that has lots of used Hortus Third, starting at $60. (Hortus II's starting at $10.) It was my fall-back if I didn't win the eBay auction :)
I was on eBay, why didn't I see it? I am really going to have to spend more time looking for Hortus instead of dolls for Granddarling. Maybe. Thanks, GV.
Well, apparently I forgot to include the link to Abebooks: http://www.abebooks.com/ in my post above. Sorry about that :)
Aimee, the eBay auction ended last night at 6:30 CT, so if you were on after that, it wouldn't have showed up. I had been watching it for several days, and since there wasn't much action on it, I waited until the few minutes to bid.
GV, which category did you find it in? I usually check wildflower books first and then gardening, because there are so many gardening books and other gardening things there. I was beat out on a wildflower book for your area recently. Drat!
Aimee, I just did a plain ole search for "Hortus" in the main category. I had to sort through some botanical prints, which you can avoid if you go to books: non-fiction books: home and garden: gardening
G_V, I'm glad you found one. I got mine at Alibris (http://www.alibris.com) for a really good price. I just checked and they have a couple, one for $59.95. I use mine a lot. there is a problem with the fact that it was published in 1976, I think, and there have been some changes in classifications since then, but it gets me on a path with landmarks most of the time.
Glad you got one Terry. did you ever find the AHS A-Z?
Sue, not yet. But someone posted a link to a source for it at half-price, so if I can't snag a used copy cheaper than that, I know where to go :)
Terry, the Half-Price Bookstore by me has tons of the AHS A-Z for $39.95. They didn't have the Hortus, tho.
I got mine for $1 donation to the Herb Garden Volunteer Society :) As new books are purchased, we are allowed to buy the older versions. Since I am chair of the library committee, I know what books will be coming in and going out, so I can get in line first! We got a new book for free last winter when we updated our collection, so I was allowed to buy the old, dog-eared one.
