2003 weird seed dip

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

seems a lot have expressed interest in the weird seed dip that Mary did 2 years ago. It was one of the best seed swaps I was ever in.
Let's try it again, okay??

Anyone interested sends me 10 packets of their most unusual seeds (alpines, perennials, fruit, shrubs, trees, tropical, vines - **not veggies or annuals**), labelled with their Latin name. Please try to keep them unusual and not common things we get in every seed round robin.

If you only have small amounts of lots of things, you can make up a Mixed Trade of several small packets (each labelled, please) to count as one.

They can be all the same or all different.

You can send more than 10 packets if you like. You'll get back however many you send in.
Please send them in a padded envelope to arrive here by March 1st. That gives time to get them sorted and sent back out quickly in time for spring.
I'll put them all in a pile (or a flower pot) and pick out ten packets for each participant (or however many packets you sent in), and send them back to you in your padded envelope by March 15th.

I'm not doing wish lists, but if there's any type of seed you particularly like or don't like, you can put in a note and I'll see what I can do, but I'm not promising anything.

Anyone interested? E-mail me at missytig@charter.net for my address if you want to join in or if you have any suggestions or questions. Put "Weird Seeds" in the subject line. Only subscribed members, please.

Hi TiG, Yes I'd like to join in if possible. I live in the Netherlands and I hope this is not a problem.

don't think it's a problem, will be one packet of seeds from you, and then one going to you:)
Hope all our international friends will join in.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

I'd be very interested. I wish it could include annuals and edibles, though -- my most interesting seeds are annual, and another group I find interesting is exotic annual ornamentals (vines, shrubs [yes, annual shrubs]) that also happen to be edible or improvements from species that are primarily viewed as edibles.

Could a bulb substitute for a seed packet?

Is there a recommended seed count? I may only have five or ten of some rare seeds.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Me too.Not sure how many seeds are enough

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, tropicals and some vines are considered annuals by many, and they are on the list. So I guess we're talking no marigolds, zinnias, that type 'annual'. We are looking for hard to come by seeds, so if it is considered an annual, but hard to come by and something nice, do it.
Would rather not get into veggies though.
I hate to say 'so many seeds' make a trade. If the seed is hard to come by, or doesn't make a lot of seed, then of course less will be fine. For something that makes a lot of seed, the usual is about 25. Hate to have too many rules, if everyone will use their best judgement and go by the above as able, it will work out. If you only have 2 or 3 of a good seed, then send two small packs to make one.
I'll step out on a limb and say yes to bulbs.
As always when we start these things, suggestions are welcome.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm in!

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

tiG, are you talking about very tiny bulbils that would only weigh as much as a packet of seed? SIGNA did this with Ferraria crispa cormels and that worked well, but they 'fit' into the seed packet, maybe that could be the determining factor.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Great! I've been pondering, and I think I can put together a decent group.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

John, I think that's a good idea. You will be sending me your seeds in a bubble envelope (please purchase one, guys) and so they would need to be able to go to someone else for the same postage.

Bloomingdale, NJ(Zone 6a)

Count me in-sounds like fun!

Remember that bulbs will not be very suitable for international traders. Customs sometimes , even now creates a barrier....It's the luck of the day !

Seeds are more "diplomatic" and easier to pack.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if any come in, I will keep them in the US, so we don't run into any one's package being stopped:) good thinking cristina!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

sure, why not????? count me in from Canada! Elaine

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I'm in, too. So glad I made the suggestion to do this again. This is gonna be sooooo much fun. Now I'm gonna dig out my seeds & see what I can contribute. It's like Christmas allllll over again. And the seeds should arrive in time to start thinking of starting them. Good luck, everybody. So glad to be a member of www.davesgarden.com

I'm going to look at what I've got tomorrow. If I think I have enough to send, count me in!

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

Count me in too. Sounds like great fun!!
Jackie

count me in also. I know I should cut myself off from new seeds, but how can I resist?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

hehehe, good to have you in!!! you should all have mail from me, if you don't, or if you're not sure about something, email me.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I haven't received email from you.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Tig, Your seeds are in the mail!!!!! Now there were some huge seeds in that pack (about the size of a lemon) and I hope you count those as one since they were so large. I had some smaller ones that I counted 3-4 to a pack but they were the size of large grapes. Talk about biggggg. Anyway, they're in the mail. Have at em! I picked out the oddest & most zany, all were tropicals. Looking forward to this. I hope I get seeds from Europe & S. America & Australia and all over. Buttoneer.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

cool!!!! I hope we all get some really good things out of them. Mary split the packs, trying to get a bit of everything to everyone, that's what I was thinking of doing, the packs will be smaller, but you should get more variety. thoughts?

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Please count me in and let me have your address to mail my contribution.

Greetings from Chile,

Ursula

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Tig, I was in such a heck of a hurry to get the seeds to you, I forgot to put money & a return address label in the bag!!!!! Ai yi yi. (are you laughing, yet?) I am putting this in the mail tomorrow so when you get the package, remember to put the label with it. Am also sending you a couple dollars to cover the cost of mailing out all those huge seeds. Oh yes, the name of those huge seeds are Canavalia rosea (Bay Bean). Have fun! Buttoneer and yes, you can split up the seeds. Should make it much more interesting. How does one split up a lemon-sized seed? ROTFLMBO.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Judy, it won't take a couple of dollars, I have to buy a few envelopes anyway, and i'll just use one of those, just need 67 cents for stamps. hmm.... think I'll just let one lucky person have that one seed:) hehehe!!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Tig, there are 5 of those large seeds in there. I can imagine how large the seedpod must be. I did send out $ 2.00 for you so just keep it. You will need it to send out those 5 large seeds. LOL.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I would like to join if I ccan.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

you have mail. if anyone hasn't gotten an email from me yet, please let me know:)

got Judy's seeds today and we're off to a great start!!!

Seymour, TN(Zone 6b)

tig, I lost the email you sent me ...please resend, I don't want to miss out !

Cheryl

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I think I gave the Postman a king-sized "hernia" from carrying those seeds to tig. LOLOLOLOLOL (Tig, don't forget to change the name on the big bomber seeds to Canavalia rosea.) This is soooo exciting. Just hope it's all that Tig says it was before & is now. Remember people, send your most "imaginative" and weird & rare seeds, if at all possible. We can make this a real creative effort and everybody wins.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I have never participated in a seed swap before and today I got to wondering how many seeds are usually in each envelope and also how many varities of seeds each particitant might send. ie: do all 10 packets have to be different or can most be the same of the more unusual seeds? Thanks for any answers to my questions.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm asking that no more than 3 packets be the same. Most seed trades are about 25 seeds, but with us going for rare and unusual, less is okay. If you only have a few, you can send two small packets to make one trade, minimum 10 trades. I'm going to do like Mary did and split the packs up several ways. That way more of us will have a chance to try new things. Won't spread them too thin, I do want people to have a good chance at germination though. But do any of us really need 10 of something when 3 or 4 would do and make more people happy? (hope I'm making that clear:)
You'll get to try more things this way.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the answer.

Horn, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

hi TiG,
I've marked the seeds that I send in with a piece of coloured (mine is striped) tape. We all did in the last seed swap that Mary organized. By that way she could easely recognize who send in which seeds and get different seeds back then the seeds they send in. As I got seeds back it included also a list with the different marks and the e-mailadresses that belong to those marks.By that I could ask info about seeds that I got. Perhaps it is a good suggestion to do it like this in our seedswap.

I have a question...I would love to participate in this but I don't think my seeds would be "weird" enough. Here is an example..purple hycinath bean vine ( lablab ), different Hibiscus, cup and saucer vine. These are too common aren't they ?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I forgot about that part, it was so long ago. looked up her thread, but I guess that was in the email she sent out.
btw, if anyone objects to splitting up the packets, please speak now, either post or email me. :)
another thought too, if what you send isn't in the PDB, it would be great to get it added before the seeds go out, then we know right where the info would be.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Mary didn't include a list like that with mine. The only problem is most of my weird and hard to get seeds were received from trades, and I have no information on them, only as to their Latin and known names.
