Last Name First

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Oh, Dave, the Cultivar Name goes after the Common Name. A Variety Name would go after the Species Name. There is no provision for that when adding a new plant. As a result there is some confusion between the two in our PDB.
Any suggestions?

Ulrich, can you be more specific? Are you saying that Common name and Cultivar are not sufficient?

Dave, I think what Ulrich is saying is that when you create a new entry in the Plants Database, the fields are sequenced as follows:

Common Name
Cultivar Name
Family Name
Genus Name
Species Name

When, from a taxonomy standpoint, it would be logical to show them as:

Common Name
Family Name
Genus Name
Species Name
Cultivar Name

Same holds true for the way the fields are displayed once an entry is created.

I see, I've fixed it.

hehehehe, now I'll have to retrain myself ;0)

Sorry, didn't mean to upset the applecart.
Actually I meant "Variety", usually expressed as var. xxx after the species name, as in 'Aeonium arboreum var. atropurpureum'

P.S. Please note how I worded the beginning of the thread.

Ahh, okay let me back up and take a stab at the question.

Short answer: we don't have a field for variety.

The lack of the field probably creates some confusion; however, the inclusion of the sole cultivar field has created confusion all by itself. A field for each would most certainly cause the editors to bury our heads in our hands and sob.

The cultivar field is used for cultivar names (and parenthetically trademarked names, when commercial growers foist the same old cultivar on us, dressed up in a brand-new name.)

Varietal names use the cultivar fields in certain instances, namely vegetables.

In the rest of the database, we have loosely followed a pro forma that places varietal, subspecies and form names in the species field. For example, "cataria var. citriodora"

It's admittedly imperfect, but there is no way I want to make every user wade through fields for cultivar, variety, form, and subspecies, and figure out which one(s) to use.

When you say 'I've fixed it' do you mean that from now on the cultivar name will appear under the genus and species name and if this is so, will this be retroactive?

All I changed was the "Add" and "Edit" forms. With regards to the main plant page (the "details on..." page) it hasn't been changed.

If that also needs changing, someone please tell me what specifically to do. :)

dave

Thanks Dave

If you could change the main entries to this, it would bring us in line with other sources :)

Botanical names names are usually written thusly:

Family
Genus
Species
Cultivar

Can't speak for the common names, here in the UK there doesn't seem to be a common system on where to place those within the order.

Is that do-able?

Yes, doable, but I need Vols to "sign off" on this.

You know, the cultivar is indeed shown already, next to the common name in single quotes. Would it become redundant to also show it down below?

dave

The cultivar name is shown twice already

Cultivar: Vedrariensis
Family: Campanulaceae
Genus: Lobelia (low-BEE-lee-uh) (More Info)
Species: x gerardii

The presentation of the data should be from most general to most specific, as Baa listed them above. Synonyms would still display beneath the family/genus/species/cultivar names.

Got it - take a look and see if it's right, please.

Within the entry itself, it looks fine. But we must have the names posted in more places than I thought.

The heading of each entry still has the old sequence, as does the main page of the PDB, and if I do a search, the results still have the old order.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. This was kind of a domino effect; once you start changing them, then you realize just how many places we show the information ;(

Has that Baa been causing trouble again?

Ummm, no I think it was Ulrich who started it. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Phew!

This will teach me to leave well enough alone and stop rocking the boat in the future!

Please! I'm getting seasick *giggle*

Really, I don't care how they are displayed when I add a plant, but it sure has made me sit up and take notice! I am a whole lot more careful now to read the field names before I sign off on a new plant. Good!
