Need some homework help

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

My ds has a homework problem that we can't figure out. Wondering if anyone here can help us so he can get finished with his work for the night.
Here's the problem:

What time of day is it when the hour hand is perpendicular to the minute hand and the minute hand points to the number 12?

We think it might be 12:05, OR is it 11:55??

Any help would be great!!
TIA
Mollybee and Casey!

This is the what webster says it is....
: standing at right angles to the plane of the horizon : exactly upright b : being at right angles to a given line or plane
But I still don't know?? I thought it would be 12:15 too, but dh says nooo Help!!!!

You have the angles right, Mollybee...just not the clock hands. If 12:15, the HOUR hand would be pointing at 12, not the minute hand (which is what you want).

With the minute hand pointing at 12, the hour hand would have to point to 3 (perpendicular) to make it 3:00.

Also!...a second answer would be 11:45. (The minute hand would STILL point to 12, and the hour hand would still be perpendicular at the 9.)

if the minute hand is on 12, that means it's something o'clock. It could either be 9 or 3 o'clock

Ok well I am going to go with 3:00, It's his bedtime and we need to finish this up.
Thanks for all the help ya'll!
I'm sure it will be a while before I find out if we guessed right or not....you know teachers and the way they grade papers!
Thanks agian!

Poor teachers, do they still have to grade papers by hand? I remember when the straight A students and maybe a few favorites could get extra points or privileges by helping with the grading. Or when teachers brought home stacks of work every night and recruited family members to help. But I thought test labs and computers were probably everywhere but in pre-K by now. Come to think of it, Granddarling had them in pre-K. I guess some things just must be handled indvidually still. Glad I never got that teaching certificate. What a way to spend evenings.

shoe, are you sure about 11:45, wouldn't it be 9:00 instead?

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I have to agree with tiG here, If the minute hand is ON the 12 how can it be 11:45 I thought 11:45 was when the hour hand was in between 11 and 12 and the minute hand was on 9??

I went with 3:00 I hope he gets it right!!

I know what cha mean Aimee, I remember helping to grade papers too!

9:00 or 3:00 should make the stated criteria.

Awww, I hate it when the subject of education comes up because then I feel like a cheat for lingering in tenth grade so that cute freshman could catch up with me.
