Problem at Member stores

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

I tried to order items at 2 diff. stores. It kept giving me subtotal zero and would not register items in the shopping cart -- I finally gave up.

--- just thought I would let you know.

I don't know... I checked it and it appears to be working just fine. Do you have cookies enabled for the sites you are visiting?

I looked at the logs and it appears to be working fine. You had in one cart Butterfly X L'Amour and Whiskers X Ecuador Pink, correct?

It might be a cookies problem. Are you restricting cookies on these sites, that you are aware of?

Something else has occurred to me... were these old carts that you had tried to create long ago? They expire after time, and your browser is supposed to forget about them.

I looked more closely just now and the cart ID (an internal number that I store) is an old one, indicating that you started building this cart quite a while ago, and came back today to add to it. If it's not expiring properly, it can cause problems. If you cleared your cookies and started again (or, even just click on "Clear Cart" and start over) I bet it'll work just fine.

I'll add to my TODO to make expiration work more foolproofly in the future, and this shouldn't happen again.

Actually -- I never even looked at the items you mentioned. I have ordered before at one of the stores no problem -- will try again. The internet traffic was very congested today -- maybe that was why it was doing that.

I don't think the carts were old -- in fact is was the first time I even looked at one of the member stores.

Thanks!

Well I tried again -- I had to register -- and then I had to go through a process (which I don't have time for right now) to enable my "cookies" for the site. So that was probably the problem. I guess since I easily went on and ordered just a little over a month ago - I expected the same process.

Hmmm. Cookies are indeed required for the cart to work. If you had to go through a process to enable the cookies for that store, others may have to, also.

I am going to have to make it a high priority item to make carts not rely on cookies. Thanks for your patience with this!

wonder if it was due to the upgrade dave? she had a cookie before, but it didn't 'take' on the upgrade?

tiG: I don't think that that is the case is in this instance. I think she has her browser set to refuse cookies by default, and she had to enable them specifically for the store she was visiting.

No hurry on my end -- nothing I need to order for at least a month or two.

About the cookies. Why would they be disabled by default? Is there some sort of "risk" to have them enabled? Virus possibilities etc. Just wondering if I would need to enable them -- and then disable them again.

Also - we just go the new AOL upgrade -- do you think that was what put the cookies into default - disablement?

I had the same problem a few days ago, finally I went back and cleared my cart and it worked fine....

I don't use AOL, but cookies allow you to be tracked on the web. There are many ads and cookies that are put on your computer and as you go from site to site the owners of these cookies can track where you have been.

I restrict cookies also, but I have "always allow session cookies" enabled (In Internet explorer go to tools, internet options, privacy, and click on the advanced tab. The cookies handling window opens. Check the "override automatic cookie handling" and check "always allow session cookies" You can also choose how 1st and 3rd party cookies are handled. Choose "prompt" for both 1st and 3rd party cookies. You will now get a prompt anytime a site wants to save a cookie on your computer and you can choose what you want to do with the cookie. You might want to "block" 3rd party cookies later, after you see how many cookies are put onto your computer).

Most of the carts I have run across rely on session cookies for the cart to work. When I am at a site and the site wants to put a cookie on my computer I get a notification and I am able to decide whether I want to accept the cookie or not.

Not all cookies are bad, it's just that I don't want every site to be able to save all of the cookies that they want to on my computer.

I registered today and I can't get anything to go into my cart either. Guess I can always just order by email, but thought this would be the best way to go.

I've had a bunch of people email me and they can't get the cart in my store to work either. I couldn't get it to work until I completely cleaned out all the temp internet files and cookies on my computer.
