Someone sent me a virus!!! this is horrible

no, it was one of my fellow Master Gardeners from Thibodaux. It is a mean virus, the subject line read:Merry Christmas, family photo. I opened it. It was a jpg and I could not see any photo. I then realized I'd been had. I called her asap and the account the virus had been sent on had been closed for a month. She said she recieved an email from another Master Gardener last night that contained a virus, but her scanner picked it up and deleted it. This is horrible, I think it is a worm virus, I am not sure. I did a scan and something came up as a worm.

I hope you get rid of it soon and that it doesn't hurt any of your files, thanks for letting us know. Do you have the AVG anti virus program? It will stop most email virus from getting through your email.

from what I just read it will put the following into your system. C:WindowsSyswindow.exe

You could do a search and see if it is in there, thereby figuring out if you have that virus.

It is the worm_klez.H....it came in jpg form. The puter is not working very well, I don't know how much longer it will be functional. I have gone to a site called Pc-cillin, and it detected the virus and told me the name, however, I can't get it off of my stuff. I have a good friend coming over tomorrow to help me, if there is anything left to help.

Klez can be repaired - there's hope. You bring up a really good point about file names. The default for Windows is to not show the file extension (the .exe, .jpg, .bat, etc.) and this is where trouble comes in. Just thought of an easier method of making Windows show file extensions. Go into Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer, but the Explorer program which has the little folder w/ a magnifying glass as its icon.)

Once open, click VIEW > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW tab, then uncheck the box marked "Hide file extensions for known file types."

Regarding JPG files carrying viruses, I found this and other legitimate links with the same information: http://www.itsecure.com.au/news/story.htm?StoryID=190

Basically, you still first have to be infected with Part A of the virus, which changes your registry so any JPG file opened is infected with PART B. But the virus can't be spread by the JPG files alone - you have to already be infected with Part A of this virus for that to happen. Clear as mud, huh?

Kim, just came back from reading the part A and B thing. That could explain why the virus came in as it did. It came in 2 parts. The winzip program I use showed that the first part was text and I didn't open that. The second part that winzip recognized said it had 8 documents. Although I unzipped them, I realized then something was not right with what I had been sent. I didn't open either of the files, I never clicked on to them, but I did download it. Does that make any sense? I am going now to try to clean this thing up, If I don't see yall for awhile, that means I blew this puter to the moon....

yahoo, I am one more step to being a geek! I did it! I went to the site to clean up my puter and I am still in on line...didn't blow up the puter...yay!
