Flying reindeer

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

On the "When I went down to the woods today...." thread: http://davesgarden.com/t/365056/ we were discussing the properties of the fungus and that the Sami (Laps) process them through the digestive tracts of their reindeer to make the halucinogens safer to take. The other day I was discussing with a friend various stories connected with shamans and the origin of father christmas came up:

The reindeer naturally search out fly agaric, and get high on it - staggering around, prancing and leaping. The shaman would drink the urine to assist his own trances. The Sami dwellings are designed so that, in the depths of winter, the only way in is down the chimney. And the shaman's ceremonial garb is red!!

So we have flying reindeer, and a father figure in red coming down the chimney.

I visited a Sami 'village' when i was in N Norway a few years ago. Didn't see any of this though lol. I hoped to unearth photos of this but unfortunately they seem to be lost in the mists of time (probably buried in a cupboard)

I know just the man - well, young man - who can hopefully verify this.

I could just imagine this happening.

Perhaps this is why St. Nick is so "Jolly", Philomel. Had Coca Cola caught a whiff of this analogy before they used Santa Claus in their ads so many years ago, we'd probably have an entirely different character to whip us into the Christmas spirit each year!

And have you asked this young man yet Mark?

Well I'm just off out to find out whether the reindeer were flying well enough to let Santa deliver gifts to the grandchildren..............hope they've been good LOL!!

"Perhaps this is why St. Nick is so "Jolly"." ROTF! No kidding! What a funny thing ~ most of our Christmas traditions might have come about by the use of halucinogens. LOLOLOLOL!
