Phonetic Symbols in DG's Datebase

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

I find DG's Datebase uses a set of phonetic symbols to indicate the pronunciation of the given plants, which is different from those of Webster's Dictionary and Longman Dictionary.
Could you give a general guide on how to use the symbols?

In the book'100 Desert Wildflowers" (By Natt N. Dodge),
they use the same phonetic symbols as DG's Datebase.

Jianhua, are you referring to the use of capitalization to indicate which syllable to place emphasis on? (We don't use any true diacritical marks (such as ' or ^ )in our pronunciations.)

If you (or anyone else) find a pronunciation that is incorrect, please let us know. We've tried to follow the standard rules for indicating long and short vowels and where to place inflection, but we have been known to make mistakes :)

Go-vols,
Thanks for your useful info.
Yes,here we use Capitalization to indicate the stressed syllable ,and a set of standard rules to indicate the correct pronunciation -- short and long vowels and consonants.
I would like to make clear this set of standard rules.

Jianhua, when I have some time(probably after the holidays) I'll try to create a list of what we normally use within Botanary and post it here. (Please note there is some inconsistency since entries are submitted by many users, but I try to edit whenever I find one that is outside the "norm".)

It is necessary for us to have a united and standard criterion when noting the pronunciation for DG's Datebase.
I know it is a hard but worthy-doing task to create the phonetic list.
Thanks so much for what you will do for us!
