1st day @ work

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Pheww.... just came home. I got a job as a paperboy (for local free newspapers and advertisements). It's not easy, I believe it now. First I had to sort all adrvetises and papers, then I had to deliver all of them to the houses in my area here in Pihlajarinne. Had to fill the little blue vagon 5 times. It took a couple of hours to sort them, and almost 5 hours to deliver them all. This was the first time, luckily my best friend Mirja came to help. There were many ads because it's Christmas time. This is also the darkest month so sun soon goes down when I come from school.

I have to do this twice a week, on Saturday I can do it earlier anyway, as it's a day off form school.

At least I'll get some money :} Now I can buy more things to send my friends abroad ;)
Hahahaha

A working man now. Congratulations on your first job :)

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Good for you Evert! I was a paper girl a long, long time ago. It's no fun when it's cold and snowy, is it? Hope you make lots of money!! Do the customers leave tips in Finland? I used to get lots of goodies at Christmas time.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I am jealous, Poppysue. Girls weren't allowed to deliver papers here when I was growing up. But I had to help my three brothers deliver their routes: they each had 100+ customers.

How many do you deliver to, Evert?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Thanks :)

Well, yes, it would be easier without the snow, but it wasn't very cold anyway, in 0 right now. Might be colder on weekend. But it means there isn't any snow flurries ;) It must be an ugly job on rainy days.

No tips in Finland... :(

I deliver a "packet" of papers and ads to about 250 mailboxes.

Way-to-go, Evert!

Congradulations on your job. It will get easier as you get into the system of doing it. My husband and sons were all paper delivery boys, my husband had 3 or 4 routes on a big airforce base. The money you earn will be nice.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Evert, that is great, lots of hard work I guess HUH??? keep warm, wear your gloves and scarf...
Your parents must be proud of you
CONGRATULATONS

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Congratulations, Evert! I helped a boyfriend with his paper route for a while when I was in high school, and I'll bet you'll never guess how.

On horseback! That's right, I had a horse for a few years, and my boyfriend and I rode double and tossed papers from horseback. Obviously the route wasn't right in town, LOL. Boy, at least the horse was warm in the winter, LOL.

Yes, not many people realize how much work is involved in sorting, separating, packaging and delivering newspapers, especially in the cold and dark! Congratulations on your job, Evert.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Well shut mah mouth, that sure brings back memories! I delivered papers everyday after school, and then on Sundays had to get up at 4 a.m. and deliver them in the dark, on my bicycle! Those Sunday papers were so big I needed help getting them in my pack, and then more help getting them on the handlebars of my bike. Off I'd go, pulling one at a time out of the pack, slinging it across the yard (hopefully landing on the front porch or at least close to the steps). I got pretty good with my aim! I'll never forget tho, one dark morning, eye-balling my target, letting go with a heavy Sunday paper, then about the time it hit the ground, SO DID I! Yep, I ran slap-dag into a parked car! The back wheel of my bike came up, tossing me and the papers everywhere! I wasn't hurt, but the papers were still so heavy I couldn't get the pack back on my handlebars, so had to take an armfull and run ahead, delivering them, then come back for more armfulls, delivering them, etc, untill the papers were light enuff for me to flip the pack back onto my bike and continue riding my route. What a morning that was!
But, all in all, I made some money! And get this Evert, I saved enuff to buy my mom and dad a really nice cuckoo clock for Christmas! I was twelve or 13 yrs old then, and to this day that clock still is alive and well in their house, cuckoo-ing away!
You'll have fun, Evert! You're making memories! Enjoy, bro!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Congrat's for you Evert! Great start first being job.. way to go!!! Keep yourself warm thick coat ok.

(Zone 5a)

Congrats on new job. I use to work at Treasure Chest and had to sort papers including those awful slippery ads as well as printing it. I had to do this while standing on my feet for a 12 hour shift. I had so many paper cuts on my arms that I couldn't count them.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Congratulations, Evert. My brother had a paper route, and he would pay me five cents to roll his papers for 150 customers. Then I would stack them into a little homemade truck we built and hand them to him to toss to the steps or porch. I wasn't strong enough to toss them and never developed good aim. He never paid me, either! When someone didn't pay him at the end of the month, he said I wouldn't get paid. A paper then cost five cents a day. We did live in the country. I need to ask Mama what that same publisher gets for a paper today.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Congratulations, Evert! I always thought that would be a neat job, but we lived too far out in the country for me to do that. All our neighbors back then had ranches ~ atleast a mile between the front gates, maybe more. If I could have it would have been on horseback like GW! LOL!

What fun, Evert! Yes, keep warm and here's hoping you never "run into trouble" like Shoe did. ;) :)!!!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Being a paperboy or -girl seems to be a popular job for youngsters there. Kids can't deliver those "real newspapers" here, they come very early in the morning.

I got new "load" of nespapers and ads today. Not so many than last time, hope I get all of them soon.

Jerome, MI(Zone 5b)

Go going Evert....happy to here you are a working man now...
Stay warm...and dry.....

Diana

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Evert, our newspaper is delivered about 5:30 am, by kids age 13 and up. In bad weather the parents drive them around, but the kids do the trudging through the snow and ice. Different world.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Hmm, that's weird.
