Today my husband and BIL and my son left here about a hour or so to go up North La. and I hope it will have deer meat when they get back home this Sunday evening. I love the best one is Deer Sausage best!
Anyone deer hunting ???
Yes, Redrose,
The deer sausage was always my favorite. My father would get a deer every fall and always made lots of the sausage; but he died two years ago and never taught any of us to make it. I do have the recipe for it but of course, no deer meat anymore.
Sure do miss it! You are so lucky to have it!

I don't but my DH does...big time. He takes advantage of all the deer seasons...archery, rifle, and muzzleloader. The muzzleloader is my favorite. There's just something about it that is fasinating to me. Our rifle season started the Monday after Thanksgiving and he brought me home a nice 5-pt. Here in PA they've changed the rules. Depending on what county you're hunting in, the buck must have at least 3 points on one side. He fits the regulations just fine. DH likes to make deer/beef jerky with the ground meat. The rest is steaks and roasts.
My DH & DS both hunt here in central Oklahoma and for the last several years one or both of my brothers have joined them. They are fortunate that they can hunt close enough to home that they sleep in nice warm beds here at the house every night and yes, I cook for them - guess we should name our house "The Deer Camp". My DS got both a buck & a doe this year - not exceptionally big but meat for the freezer. My DH & I butcher our own meat - we don't like the way the meat plants do it. We fix steaks, stew & chili meat.
Most hunting in our area this year,is to kill the deer in the high Chronic Wasting Disease area and send parts out for testing. Most are waiting for results before eating and those results are not 100%. Major loss of food source for the food pantries and tourist industry. Hope we can contain it. Anyone know of any game farms, spread the word not to import deer from WI.
I can't wait for my DH call me tonight to let me know how things goes so first of all I just want to hear .....
(Got the deer!!!) =)
I am so glad they all make it hunting this year to have them enjoy it.
Well...I'm getting ELK meat...and not even leaving home. One of the guys at the national Park where I volunteer had a permit to hunt Elk up in the White Mountains of Arizona....he got his in the last 45 minutes of the season....and will be bringing me a couple of "messes". He says it is better than beef OR deer....we'll see. Jo
Waaaaahhh no deer just called me little while ago but some men had the deers and my DH heard Bang Bang! So tomorrow will do more hunting early in the am so will find out tomorrow hopefully.
My whole family hunts on my parents property. Our season was rather late this year and I think it definately affected the hunt, the rut was all but over. All I saw were yearlings and a few good sized does, but nothing I could get a decent shot at.
We did end up with 4 deer in camp and that's plenty to split between 3 familys. Heck, I've still got some in the freezer from last year. I'll turn what's left into sausage or hamburger soon.
Snow would have been nice but at least it wasn't much below freezing!
Oh, Roadrunner, I MISS elk meat! Also bear! A former co-worker was a great hunter and his DW shared many of his catches with me. Elk is so good.
Been deer hunting only twice in 2 years up here. Mostly it's been put on the orange, grab the rifle and go for a nice long walk. No, I don't get out much.
Jo, I am envious of your elk! I thing it's the very best red meat.
My hubby's been busy hunting here.
Our freezers are now so full,
I swear, I don't think that
he's ever gotten so many before.
Our area (of mid-Michigan) is over-run with deer right now, they're responsible (for what seems like) a ba-zillion
car-deer accidents in our county.
I've been packaging up meat like crazy.
Today I'm finishing up with venison meatballs
(to freeze), then I'm done until Muzzleloading season begins.
OD :-)
P.S. Frankay, welcome to DG!

Kenny and I don't do much deer hunting, but with 100 acres I can relate to your situation, Aggiesmom ~ our house is the "Deer Camp"! LOL! In return for letting a few people hunt we not only get deer meat, usually already made into sausage and jerky, but other really neat perks ~ see pic below ~ that's Kenny's cousin on his backhoe digging our new septic system!
And Welcome to Dave's, TwinLakesChef and Frakay! And I haven't seen you around much, Aggiesmom, so welcome to you, too!
Wing, you got it made! Reduction of the deer herd, reduced damage to your land, free meat, and free septic system! How can I sign up for that kind of deal ;D
Here in the city, hunting is strictly banned. Not even with a bow or slingshot :( Only live traps allowed. Ever try to live trap a deer? Just how big do Havaharts come?
Don't know if I can continue to read this thread! Am so hungry for ANY deermeat! Would any of you adopt me? I would be glad to do the cooking. Just let me put my feet under your table! WOW!
TwinLakesChef,
C'mon over to Michigan---
plenty of venison here to go around!
Waaaahhhhh again! No deer =( DH just called me and he is on the way home about 4 hours so it is okay will go back deer hunting next weekend hope to get deer at this time. I am so happy he is coming home miss him so much also dear son too. =)
Redrose, I wish your DH could hunt in my yard! One afternoon I counted 22 of them. I used to think they were so cute, but neighbors have been feeding them (against the law here) and the herds are growning like crazy! The thought of Lyme disease does not thrill me, either does the fact that they eat everything in sight.
Mine 18 of acres.. We caught some people sneak into our land and hunt for deer. We went and find them and made them leave!! WE have been feeding deers over here. We don't hunt! Deers likes to stay around here so they know we dont allow hunt on our property! :) Even they migh feel safety here! lol
dguimo.... oh that was so sweet of you , that will be nice for my DH go hunting at your yard and never went to California before. Maybe next year =)
So I see new name to me and nice to meet you!
Missouri already had their 10 day season in November. Soon we'll have a 4 day season in December. We got about 8 I think and hope to get several more next time. We give away most of the meat. We do our own butchering too. There is a Mennonite run slaughter house several miles from here that does hundreds of deer each fall. They make wonderful Summer Sausage($1.75#)as well as jerky, hot sticks, etc. We've had summer sausage made a few times. Still have some left from the last batch they made for us. I think our daughter wants to have some made to give for Christmas gifts.
Deer have become a real problem here in Missouri. They damage and destroy thousands of acres of crops every year. That hurts farmers who are already hurting. The man who farms our land and his family and in-laws do most of the hunting on our land. We get 9 land owner permits each year and try to fill them too.
GOD bless and keep each and all of you.
Steve got one back in muzzleloader season. Tim came down Thanksgiving from CT, but didn't see anything on Sat., so he came down again on 12/6 and shot a button-buck on Saturday - gonna have lots of hotdogs from that one. We just love cooking with the deer meat, Steve is quite a chef when it comes to deer stew, chili, etc. Lots of good eating from now on and of course there is another bow season in January (or is it another muzzleloader?)
Thanks for the welcome - I have been a faithful reader of DG's for a little over a year, just don't post very often. Wingnut - you live in a beautiful part of Texas. We lived at Rocksprings for 4 years back in the early 80's and both my DH and I hunted down there where deer were taking over everywhere. My DH has a younger brother that lives in Marble Falls and their parents lived around Hamilton for years. Good luck to those of you still hunting and I wish those of you could share of pot of chili with us that don't have opportunity to get your own venison.
My DH and DS are going to leave here this friday again after work to go West,La. hunting. =)
Bob stopped by last evening. He got pneumonia while hunting the first week and couldn't go out after day three. Well yesterday was his first day back out and he saw 3 deer together, one button buck and two doe. He said he never shot and reloaded his 243 singleshot so fast. He got all three. Said he took down the first two and was gonna leave it at that, then figured since he lost so much time being sick, why not. We are gonna be knee deep in deer meat. Steve got one during muzzleloader, Tim shot one in NY and one here last weekend and now three more!!! That's a lot of venison stew and tenderloin and burger and hotdogs, yippee!
