Free countrys everywhere salute, and the others just wish for their freedom. Thanks for sharing this special day with us. Can you post a bit more about it please, what country(s) was finland part of? Was the division a peaceful one or part of the moving of country lines after World War I? How do people in Finland celebrate the day? Did you go to any special observances?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Finland used to be part of Sweden, and then Russia (not Soviet Union though some people think we were). We came independent after WW I and we were in war during WW II with Soviet Union. No one helped us, small country had to fight against massive nation. Well, some Germans did come here, but when we made somekind of a truce with SU they had to leave and they destroyed many cities in Northern Finland, like Rovaniemi. They burned all houses and left.

Finland lost the war, and we had to give some land areas to Soviet Union. They also wanted lots of stuff (trains, food, clothes, etc..) from us as war indemnities. We finally got them paid in the 50s. We had olympics in Helsinki on 1952 and it was a real show ow re-organized and quickly recovered country.

How we celebrate Independence Day... Well, everyone have their own ways, but there are blue-white candles burning in every house, and flag in the pole of course. There are some fireworks in bigge cities and such. It is not a big party with parades like there, more like a peaceful day remembering the efforts to make our country free.
