bat boxes

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

all of you who have received the bat box plans and other info - have you made your boxes yet?

you only have until March to get them in position!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Mark,
I have had mine in place for 2 years and not one bat :(

well not knowing where Indiana is other than the US I cant really advise. generally the further north you live the darker the color of the wood. If you live in the southern states just put a light colored preservative on the wood. If you live way up along the Canadian border paint the box black. The box must be positioned so the bat has free access into the box ie not clutter within 10 feet or more. it needs to be on the south side of a house, barn, tree or telegraph pole and more in the open the further north you go so the box can get warmed by the sun.

I mailed info your way but cant remember who the contact is. She has all this info in greater detail.

I have it Mark and I have several copies already made up if anyone else wants them!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Floridian: I think I still owe you postage, so I'll send it along with any seeds I might have that you'd want. Might as well use up the envelope!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I have some cut out but not assembled yet. We are doing a production line of them. Need lots of them before spring since my home is in a swampy area we have tons of mosquitos. Thanks mark and Floridian

Bat box plans? I would love to have the plans if anyone has a copy they could send me. I have been looking at bat boxes on line, but they want an arm and a leg for them. I have seen a few bats around here from time to time, but I would like to have more to help with the bugs!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I got my plans, but haven't made the bat boxes yet. I was going to work on those this winter after we finish working on the house. I'm glad you told us they have to be up by March, I didn't realize that. What's the reason?

depending on where you live bats may be coming out of hibernation around that time. bats are pregnant in May and the pups are born during June. female bats are transition roosts which they use between coming out of hibernation and and giving birth in their maternity roost.
