My pastor's wife and I are planning a trip to South Carolina this week. She's doing the driving...I'm tagging along so I'm at her mercy. We'd probably go due south from Pittsburgh, PA. She's going to the Greenville area to drop me off first, then she goes alittle farther south for her family. Here's the problem..we're both extremely concerned about the weather. Here in the north we know where storms come from...depending which direction makes the decision as to how bad they'll be and you know which direction to go. As of right now the plan is to leave either very late Wednesday arrive Thursday afternoon or leave Thursday and arrive either later that day or arrive Friday. This all depends on the weather and which direction we go. Apparently there's a storm brewin' and as of right now the trip is on. (It wasn't earlier) If you live near route 77 in West Virginia, or Virginia, and due south from there could you please tell me what it's like in your area and should we avoid it? Also, would you please pray for safety and a peaceful spirit? Thank you ever so much....
Need a favor please..
Hi there Sledder...I just checked our weather and we are about two hours west of 77 and we have an 80% chance of snow on Wednesday and 30% chance of ice Thursday morning but I must tell you that this is really unusual for us. You can check weather.com for any area that you will be driving through and it will give you a 7 day forecast. I will keep you in my prayers and enjoy your visit with your daughter. I'd be happy to have you both come visit if you have the time. I'm about 45 minutes from Greenville-Spartanburg airport if that helps to tell you where I am. Let us know when you arrive safely and I will pray for a safe trip. God bless!
I knew you'd have a clue. ((hug)) Thank you!! That helps some. I thought that weather was unusual for that area. That's why the trip was off earlier today (amongst other reasons). But we do have a small window of leaving from Pittsburgh. We just might wait and leave Thursday afternoon to arrive Friday..again depending on the weather. We're very worried about driving through the mountains in West Virginia. And then of course you have your ice down there too.
I'd love to come visit but this is an extremely short trip. The max we'll be in South Carolina is 2 days so we won't be venturing out of the area much. Perhaps this summer we'll try to get together. I hope you understand.
Satan is having a wonderful time with me lately. I'm not sure if I really should be going. We'll be extremely short staffed at work later this week (family emergencies for fellow employees), pastor's wife isn't feeling well, and now this weather issue. But my pastor's wife says I'm going and I really can't argue with her. I sure could use that "audible voice from God"
I certainly understand. The invitation is open for whenever you're down here. Have a great time with your daughter and I will keep you in my prayers until you are home safe.
Sledder, I've relatives in Morresburg, TN who are just wonderful if you need accommodations for any reason. They've plenty of room if you don't mind dogs & cats :) I'll pray for you both on your trip. If you want the info for my relatives, let me know. I can't see where 77 is in relation to Morresburg, but they are just south of the western tip of Virginia. Safe travels! Remember that snow & ice in the southern states isn't always salted as quickly since they don't stock pile the salt or the resources as we do further North. I just know that from my experiences living in the South.
Sledder... I'm in Asheville, about an hour NW of Greenville. Our latest forecast for Wednesday, all the way down to the south and east of Greenville is for ICE, accumulating during the day Wednesday. There is a strong possibility of widespread power outages from ice breaking trees and power lines. A HIGH temp. of 29 degrees is forecast for Wednesday here; Greenville will possibly be a few degrees warmer, but not much.
So if you were traveling would you wait until Thursday? And thanks for all the info and invitations. It's appreciated from the bottom of my heart.
Anyone in West Virginia? We just might try a different route...possibly to Ohio and then south.
Why is this so complicated? Give me 6" of snow anyday...you can keep the ice. Where's my sled.......???
Sledder, the updated forecast this morning puts the accumulation of ice at 1/2 to 1 inch, heaviest along I-85 near Greenville/Spartanburg SC. Since it will likely start late tonight, I'd wait until Thursday to start my trip. There seems no way around it, as the bad weather extends south into GA as well.
Be safe.
I'm with Darius...90% chance of this nasty precipitation. I'm headed out now to stock the pantry. Wait until Thursday. Check in with us and let us know where/how you are! Praying for you!
okay..that helps. Please keep us in your prayers. To the best of my knowledge we're not leaving until Thursday due to this weather front coming in. I'll let you know for sure.
You take care and be safe and prayers go with you my dear.
If by chance no one from West Virginia posts try this site: http://www.wvdot.com/. It also has a link to the Va road conditions site if you need it. I don't know if you are planning to take I-77 until you reach I-85 in Charlotte, but if you are please try to avoid the Charlotte rush hour traffic if at all possible. I hope this helps and that you have a safe trip.
Carol, Thank you for the link. I'll be using that for sure. And I know what you mean about rush hour in Charlotte. Been there..done that...and what an experience that was. I must admit though...it was better than others that I've been in. Perhaps folks saw our PA license plate and just felt sorry for us. lol
This trip has officially been cancelled due to the weather. And needless to say no one is happy either. **sigh**...
"T" :(
I am so relieved! I worried overtime about you out on those treacherous roads. I wish my son and his wife and baby had used such common sense. He is either on the way or in Tennessee now, to pick up a blasted side car for his abominable motorcycle. Do you get the feeling I am not in favor of the trip or the reason? Couldn't dissuade him, he's the headstrong baby of the family. Well, I can go back to worrying about them now. Congratulations on prevailing!
Oh I'm so sorry you don't get to visit with your daughter but I am glad you won't be on the horrid roads. Thanks for letting us know. Take care and God bless!
I'm sorry the weather ruined your plans, but I do hope you are able to make the trip in the very near future.
oh Sledder, I'm sorry you didn't get to make it this time. Maybe real soon
sledder, I'm sorry your plans fell thru, but I was worrying about you this morning wondering if you would be on the road with that terrible storm. I'm glad to see you are safe at home.
Sledder, sorry about the trip but the weather is something to have a very healthy respect for...
