Tree Time Again, Should I Worry?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hehehe, last year around this time I posted this episode in our lives. http://davesgarden.com/t/156748/
At the time I wondered how long I could get away with it!

Now, just tonite while watching Pinochio with DD, we were snuggled on the couch figgering out when we'd do our Father/Daughter shopping trip and when should we head to the woods to get the tree!

Wish me luck folks...she's 8 and 11/12ths years old this year. (Think I can once again pull it off??)

Suggestions welcome! τΏτ

What a lovely story I just read, I can't wait to hear about this years "tree cutting"

Shoe, she may well be onto you, but what fun!!! I say do it and enjoy the game you both may be playing:)

Shoe, your daughter is so lucky to have you as a father.Just think of all the memories she'll carry with her through life. You should get father of the year award !

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

Shoe, I think you can pull it off again this year! Can you anchor the tree a bit more firmly so it don't accidentally tip over? This is such a wonderful story and what fond Christmas memories are made of. Just a thought here - why don't you start planting some trees on your property so when Alex is older you two can still go out together and find that perfect tree?

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I too think the Father of the year suits you to a T!! Any man that would go to such extreams to keep the tradition going for the sake of this daughter really should be Father of the year!! I also agree with tiG, she might just be on to ya but she too is enjoying it. I bet she will have tons of Wonderful stories to tell her own childern!
I say go for it and let the memories continue!

Crossville, TN

I agree with Carol...plant now...as this tradition will surley continue through the Grandkids!! It might taper off a little during her "teen years"...as we all know that parents are "gross" during this time in their life....but she will always have it in her heart...and will think Grandpa should do it for HER kids!! Thanks for a beautiful story. Love & Hugs to you and yours. Jo

'shoe, thanks for the day brightener! That is a very cool story. And yes, I think one of these years, the truth will come out, but even if the role-playing stops for a few years, I'd put money on her wanting you to rekindle the tradition when she has children ;-)

Go for it Shoe, even when she knows she will probably play along and enjoy the game. And I think the suggestion of planting some live Chirstmas trees is great too, I believe you can buy them in bundles of 25 or so as little seedlings. Who knows, maybe you could branch out and start a Christmas tree farm so other folks can come and cut their own trees and start their own family traditions.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Shoe, did you paint that picture?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Welp, if she is on to me, she sure is good at not letting on! She even wanted to take the video thingy again!

I like the idea of planting trees...I don't have much open land but I assume they'll grow in the woods. Was also thinking of getting a whole tree (balled roots) and planting it, then maybe have her help me dig it up. (Still thinking about that one.)

tiG, I got that card from Louisa last year, after she read the post. She thought it was the perfect card to go with the story. Has been hanging near my desk all year so thought I'd take a pic of it for this thread!

Shoe here is a thought, as you said get the whole tree with roots and plant it close to your yard and that way every year you and DD can decorate it together thus saving the trees around your area and your poor back lol.

Shoe - what a wonderful tradition. I still remember very clearly going to chop down our tree every year. I always fell into the little stream, yes every year. The ride home in the back of the pick-up was always freezing. It still brings back wonderful memories. Keep up the tradition.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Shoe it's a wonderful tradition and one you will always cherish.I think even when Alex discovers the truth she might not let on because she enjoys it so much. Some of my fondest memories of my Dad are going to cut down the tree each year. So like you said you are making great memories.

Shoe, as long as kids believe in Santa, kids still believe in their daddies. I know I always did, years after I quit believing in Santa. Don't ever give up on your traditions.

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

YES! YES! YES! YEAH!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Shoeman, you never cease to amaze me with your wacky brand of tenderness. This is such a cute tradition, you must keep it up in some form.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

This is awesome, Shoe!! Did you do it yet, get your tree? We wanna' hear all about it!

All we have here is juniper and cedar, so that's our Christmas tree. Every time I smell one it reminds me of Christmas. Kenny and I were walking through the field on T-Day and found the perfect one! Now, if we just get moved into our real house by Christmas we'll go get it. :)!

Lupine, I know what you mean about Daddies. Mine's been gone for 24 years, but I still think he's Superman! BUT what do you MEAN you don't believe in Santa, girl?! He's real and he's everywhere! He even started this thread, you know...

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Way, way, cool, Shoe. :) Continued....http://davesgarden.com/t/369378/
