My favorite, Dave

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I just have to thank you, Dave, for the 'watched thread'. I know it's something that we've gotten used to but without it, I'd miss the answers to yesterdays questions. I don't think that I've seen it anywhere else and I truly appreciate it.

Thank you. I think the thread watcher is one of the best features of DG. I made it almost immediately after making the forums.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I totally agree!!! That way if I only have a few minutes to stay online I can quickly check my watched threads and zip on out about my day! Thanks from me too! :)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I agree, it is an inegnious feature which I rely on for updates on posts that interest me.
Dave, I've said it before and will say it again, You are a genius!! thanks for everything you have done on this site

A genius, huh? I usually reserve that word for Trish! :)

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Well Trish is obviously a genius too.
Just imagine Dave, if you had come to Hamburg first ..... the Paper People Post would only have been sent to consenting adults per eMail ;-)

Thanx Trish, you kept the party cleeeen :-D

Trish is a genius in her own right too....I didnt mean to exclude Trish.
I'm timing it so that I will be able to take gardner Dave to Turkey with me in April so he can eat all that Doner that he likes so well.....

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

What is doner, Pebble?

DONER KEBAB!!!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Wintermoor- I'm betting that Dave would have also enjoyed the PG tour much better than the R or X scene. Just seeing the words "Red Light District" was enough to make us both blush :)

Pebble- I was telling Dave last night how you were taking him to Turkey- he is so thrilled!! We ate Doners the other night, and I know he's hankering for the real thing!

Trish

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Yeah, you're probably right Trish ;-)

Maybe if Dave gets here, I'll show him some other sights of the city, (nothing bad). I always tell friends and family who visit me here to keep at least 3 days free to see the sights, and a week to recover...... lol

Here is a DONERCI, one who makes Doner.
This is eathen from a bed of Pita, (the pita in turkey is thicker than the pita bread that is normally found here - and one of the main ingredients missing in the ones here is a black seed that they put on top, looks like a sesame seed, but a totally different flavor, cant think now what it is called, but it is called something here...) they shave this meat on top, then on top of that, you can have a choice of sauces, the traditional one is a yogurt based sauce with heavy garlic, however, I prefer the red sauce, which is a tomatoe type sauce

pebble: Is the seed cumin?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

no it isnt, I'll try to figure it out and let you know.
It looks exactly like sesame seed, but blacker than black and not shiny.
Let me go into a turksih site and see if I can find it.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

egads...what a hoax...
I know it isnt poppy seed, but one site had it as "corekotu" in turkish, but next to it in English, they had Poppyseed. On another site, again "corekotu" in turkish, but caraway seed in english, I know it isnt caraway, sent a message to my husband, and he said it is "black cummin" so Dave, I guess you were right.
But it doesnt taste like the powdered cumin we normally use. I thought I remembered another english word for the seed I am thinking of. I dont trust the translations (even my husbands)

We need a botanical name. :)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

surprise surprise, they are all of the above...how funny, and you know what? it is from the nigella flower...
Family: Ranunculaceae
Taxon: Nigella sativa L.
Parts Used: seeds
Description:

The seeds are tiny ( 1-2 mm long), black,
3 sided and look a bit like pieces of flint
under a microscope. They have a strong,
spicey, peppery taste

It's called Black caraway and black cumin in Europe
in the USA "love in a mist" and nutmeg flower (???)
also Roman coriander by the romans.....

***but I know that I have collected love in am ist seeds, and they are shiny, whereas the "corekotu" seeds are matte.

Yep, that's the cumin I was talking about (nigella). I find it interesting that it's the same as love-in-a-mist.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Doesnt look like my cumin seed,I was thinking Cardamom

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I think cardammon seeds are pretty big compared to these itty bitty ones.
Dave, truthfully, I didnt have a clue with the nigella, love in a mist thing. That is all new to me, as I was reading about it, I have learned of all the healing properties it has. My gosh....a pharmacy in a seed....

Compare the seeds and flower pictures above to the pictures here:

I learn something everytime I come to this site,Lesson of day,I need to find a different cumin seedLOL

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I too learn something new every day here on Dave's.

Dave, I think it is the same, it was under my nose all along, I just didnt know what to look for.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hey, Pebble, I wanted to let you know the recollection of this post inspired me to try these Black Cumin this year. When I got to checking, I realized we didn't have it in the PDB, so here it is if you want to add a note about it: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/54609/ Thanks for the idea; I hope they grow well!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I am trying to, do I just add it in the comments section?

I did add it as a comment.

Yep, and now that I scan the entire thread, I see you have a photo of the seeds, if you want to add it (just like adding a photo to a post :)
Thanks!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

well, I would have, but there is one already there posted by arsenic.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Not on the Nigella sativa entry; arsenic's are on the Nigella damascena entry (two different species, even though the seeds look almost identical.)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

oh - ok I will then attempt to.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I think i have it now, but I have a feeling I double posted, and dont know how to find out if i did...will you check for me and delete it if i put it in the incorrect one?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Very interesting, great addition to the PDB, Pebble!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

thanks Weezy, it was at Go-vols's urging that I added it, otherwise I feel I am not qualified to add anything.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Pebble, we're all qualified to add things. That's what makes our PDB so special. We all contribute what we can, and if we have any questions, there are folks out there that always offer information. Once a person gets started making entries, it's contageous! I hope to see more of your entries, because I know they will be interesting, too. If you need any help, let me know. I like researching on the web.

New York City, NY(Zone 6b)

Getting back to Liz's original post about the Thread Watcher (after a lovely culinary excursion), it is a terrific feature. Of course, I didn't even begin using it until just after the New Year. DUH!!!

Doner kebab kept me alive when I was a broke student. I still like it. I prefer the tomatoe~based sauce on chicken and the yogurt~based sauce on lamb. I never did know what those little black seeds were, but they do add a nice touch to the dish.

Adam.

(Zone 5a)

Very interesting, thanks Pebble and Dave for the information, this will be one that I add to my herb note book.
