Turkey War

Harford County, MD(Zone 6b)

A couple of grocery stores here are selling turkeys for 19 cents a pound. I just bought two 18 pounders for $3.45 each. You can't buy a pound of lunch meat for that...
The sad thing about it is,I already bought one Saturday before they dropped the price and paid more for a 14 lb one than I did for two at 18 lbs. I don't think I've ever seen them this cheap. At one store you had to spend x amount of dollars to get one at that price, but where I shop you didn't.

Hey that would make up for the ones my DW & MIL got on Friday night. They played bingo at the town feather party.
Used up $25 & came home with 3 - 10 lb turkeys. Oh well it goes to a good cause. Volunteer fire dept. has this feather party to raise money for their operation. They also have a unoffical motto; "You come to our party, we'll come to your fire!"

Ginny, we also have turkeys for 19 cents a pound here if you spend $75 or more on groceries. I think this may be one of most inexpensive Thanksgiving dinners I've ever prepared. Some items like sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and etc came from the garden this year instead of the store. This will be my first year making pumpkin pies without using canned pumpkin so wish me luck! :o)

CountryGardens, I think your volunteer fire department's feather party and motto is really great. Ours sells pit cooked bbq in the summer and brunswick stew in the fall for fund raising.

Hey, Carol... did you know that almost all canned pumpkin isn't really pumpkin, but Curshaw squash... It's a tall striped winter squash that tastes like pumpkin. I wonder if they have less stringiness... hmmm.

I have only one "fresh" pumpkin pie, and getting all the strings out was a mess! Good Luck with yours. :)

They used to can Festial pumpkin near here. The farmers grew Golden Delicious Squash for that. (Try it, it is the best squash by far!) Pumpkins do not yield enough per acre to make them profitable for use as canning pumpkin. Lots of fun stuff when it comes to veggies used for the canned market!

Darius, the pie pumpkins I use don't have strings. I don't grow them, but I can get them locally for about a quarter each in the fall.

Wow, lupinelover... that's a good price! Here, the small pie pumpkins run around $3-4 each.

Monday I shopped for our Thanksgiving dinner and got 2 turkeys! I got a FREE 14 pound turkey because I also bought a ham ($15). Then I got a 26 pound turkey for $3.64! That was $.14 a pound because I bought over $25 of other groceries. This will be the first Thanksgiving that I have had to make the Turkey, so I figured if I mess one up......at least we will still have something to eat, LOL
