PDB rose options

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

I often have trouble deciding what to put for the fragrance option. We have the choice of very fragrant or slightly fragrant, but nothing in between. I don't know how easy it would be to add a middle choice or how important people feel this is, but thought i would mention it at least.

philomel, as best I recall, when I was working on the rose form, we debated on that one and decided to have the three choices you see now. Its lack of middle ground forces you to make a firm declaration, and is (arguably) more helpful to someone seeking a rose with a fragrance that is none, slight or very intense.

Philomel, when I was doing all the work for the rose database, this often came up. One reference book would say "Strong", another would say "none", another would say "light and fruity", still another would say "spicy".

I have yet to encounter a rose that had "none". A trick to getting any rose's scent to become stronger is to make it slightly warmer than room temp. One hybridist would put a bloom under his hat for a few minutes, then offer it to a critic to smell! It always worked :) Lightly breathing on a bloom a few times usually will do the trick.

Go_Vols has solemnly promised to finish work on this massive project soon. I trust her. After all, I thought I could finish my part in a week and it took me almost 2 months! I didn't keep a total count, but I think I sent her about 5,000 different roses! She gets the task of editing them all. So here is a rose, from me, just for you.

That's lovely thanks lupine :) A rugosa?
Like the tips to encourage fragrance!

Thanks for the explanation g_v, I know how much work you're doing, which is much appreciated!! I can see your reasoning, that's fine, just didn't want something overlooked.

Cross my heart, and pinkie promise - they're a'comin :)

I find myself humming "...All I want for Christmas is my Rose Database, my Rose Database, my Rose Database..."

LOLOL Terrie.
It'll be a monumental achievement! I'm not rushing you - just looking forward to hopefully providing some photos. It'll be heaven not having to fill in all the details, just pop in a pic!!
:)

Phil, a word of warning: almost all the information I provided is from reference books. Please, as you enter photos, take a few seconds to check over the info, and either edit or note any differences in the notes section.

Roses are grown all over the world, and climate has an enormous effect on their habit of growth. That is a big reason why I wanted this DB so bad!

Good eye! Yep, a rugosa. 'Buffalo Gal' in honor of my mom, a Buffalo gal (by birth :) This is a major player in my breeding efforts.

OK Lupine, i'll make sure i try and note down any extra info :)

How's you're breeding programme going? That's a lovely rose and so good it has meaning for you too. Yes the rugosas are so healthy. I love the hips too.

Waiting for my other rugosa (Wild Spice) to finish setting its hips, then find out how many of the crosses took. I am so excited, Buffalo Gal has about 80 viable seeds from crosses this summer. Dancing for joy.
