Oregano for bacteria???

Burwell, NE(Zone 4b)

This may sound dumb but here goes. I brought in my diascia (sp?)for the winter. I planted it in fresh potting soil. But there is a white-ish moldy stuff that keeps growing on top of soil. I dig it off but it returns. Anyhow, I read in Sunday magazine supplement that oregano is good for ridding the body of bacteria. I thought I would try it for this. I sprinked some on top of soil and now my dining room smells like oregano. :-) I will keep you posted as to it working or not.

sandy, is there any chance that you are using a wetable fertilizer when you water your plant? If so, it could be salt build up on your soil. Just a thought...

Yum, I would love to smell your dining room! Did you grow your own?

I am mostly just watering with straight water. I know it is not a salt or mineral buildup. I know what those look like. This is white and fuzzy. I think it must have something to do with the potting soil. It was a commercial bagged one but I think it was also partly compost. Makes me wonder what was in that compost. Thanks for the idea though, Lisa. Hi,Lupinelover. I did not grow. Just sprinkled it out of the spice jar. I did grow Greek oregano in my garden this year though. It made beautiful blooms. I will try to dry some next year if I get it again. I did dry a bunch of dill and that really made the house smell nice while it was drying.

Yes, one great thing about drying the aromatic herbs, they sure do make the house smell good. I love to hang-dry basil for that reason. For some strange reason it always makes me hungry though :)
