a forum for just asking a question. I don't always know where to go to ask. So Dave, I'm going to have to ask it here and if you want to move it, feel free.
I have planted some trees in the past and one or two of them keep shooting suckers up from ground level. What can I do to make this stop? It drives me nuts all summer. I cut them off and up they come again. Both are maple trees. One Sugar and one Silver. HELP!!
Thanks,
Shirley
Sometimes I need........
and sometimes Garden Talk is a good general question forum.
Thanks...............didn't think about Garden talk. Evert, I can honestly say I need my glasses changed. Never saw a forum called Trees and Shrubs before. Thanks a bunch.
You can all ignore this now. I went to Trees and Shrubs. Thanks for your help.

There was also a thread about this (posted by poppysue) about the exact same question as you had. It had to do with her lilac tree, if memory serves me.

Thanks Dave, I'm over there looking now. Just back to page 4 so far.
Found it! http://davesgarden.com/t/232153/
Thanks Dave, but I think this is a different situation. Will try the chemicals you mentioned if I can find them. The tree suckers come right out of the base of the trunk and it appears that a limb started down that low and they just keep on coming out. If I can't get this stopped, I'm cutting down the trees and starting over. These trees are probably 8 years old.
When you start over, plant them in large containers. There are many attractive types available at garden centers.
Large containers don't work for trees or shrubs in Iowa. Way too cold in the winter. Besides, one puff of wind and they are laying on their sides.
Brugie - my Mom has a silver maple and it's shaped like a large bush with branches going all the way to the ground. Sorta like an un-pruned brug. Maybe it's just how they grow.....
Seedlings pop up all over too.
Brugie, I guess I'm "slow" Where on Brugie's page do I find your picture? I see your pink beauty and can click on the other 4 flowers you have up., but no pic. of you.
lizh, the brug replaced the picture of Jim and I. Sorry. I'm scared to start messing with that again.
Sue, our silver maples her must be about 50 ft. tall. The one I'm going to cut down if I can't get some control over the sprouts, is about 15 ft. or more now.
Darn!!!
That's such a great picture, Brugie. What a nice couple!
Thanks Weezingreens. I kinda like my partner in life.
That's plain to see just by looking at the photo. Ain't love grand?
Yes, but it took me a few years to get it right.
I think it's taken us all a long time to get it right, Brugie, but when we do, it's all the sweeter!
Well, now I'm going to get ready to watch "The Practice" and learn how to get a divorce. Just kidding, but it is one of the very few shows I watch on TV. Daves took the place of TV over a year ago for me.
I still watch a bit of TV around here, Brugie, but Dave's has become a regular spot each evening for me, as well. I often get on Dave's while my bathwater is running, and by the time I get in tub, it's already cooled down a bit. It's fortunate I have a cast iron tub since it keeps the water warm longer! It's just 6pm here, so we'll be watching The Practice later ourselves. Have a good evening!
Brugie what a beautiful picture and your love shows. Well, I did it again, was going to watch one show on TV and fell asleep.
Thanks you guys. I have to say I enjoyed The Practice and fell asleep and didn't wake up until about 6:30 this morning. Daves must be good for me. At least I sleep well after visiting her for hours on end. Have a good day!!
