Has this been an absolutely insane year for other people?
I have to admit - for once in my life, I am looking forward to winter - to a time where I can settle in the house a bit, spend time indoors, reading, getting caught up - spending time with family, and cataloguing and organizing my seeds and plants for next year. Become - *whispering* - a HOMEBODY. No more 70 hour work weeks, no more trips, no more endless weeding.
I guess after months and months of 60-70 hours a week working, plus redoing the garden of my new house, plus a couple of out of state work trips - including being in Japan now for two weeks, plus getting a new puppy who thought the world should wake up at 5 am (and was very vocal about it) - that I realize am just tired - physically and mentally!! And a nice calm winter is sounding like a good solution - in the house, some days no shoes, maybe the whole day in pajamas.
Resolutions for the winter:
DO NOT join a round robin until next year (looked too tempting - but, it's another activity)
DO participate in the holiday card exchange (OK, can opt out of one thing, but this sounds fun! - hehe)
DO complete all of my remaining seeds to be sent out
Organize my bulbs so they don't dry out this winter
DO throw away what is not needed or has not been used for the past year
Simplify life - so it is to be enjoyed, not managed!!
Hope this didn't sound negative - I am very grateful for a good life, now it's time to enjoy it - and the best way to have time is to make the time - and I guess this is sort of my way of declaring myself. :-))

Exhausted and looking forward to winter - Resolutions
I hear ya! I think winter is God's way of making us rest a bit. The plants go dormant and rest, and so do we. Of course, you folks in the tropics have it so beautiful, y'all don't need rest. ;) But those of us in the Lands Of The Changing Seasons can enjoy a little downtime.
I agree! I can hardly wait for the first weekend that I am off work and it is pouring rain outside so I can curl up with a book, put some old jazz cd's on and let the world wash itself outside while I lounge around doing nothing but relaxing.
I'm for the downtime, but not the rain.......want to see some sun for a change. Winter is letting the old go peacefully, and recharging for the new beginnings!! Unless of course, womeone has a ticket to the tropics for me.
"eyes"
I'm ready too. Finally managed to get most of the gardens ready for winter, just in time too. the rains are coming, and we wont see sun till spring.
It is nice knowing you dont have to rush out to weed or prune or whatever....
I'm ready for a rest too
Yes, I'm looking forward to winter, too. Usually, by now, the gardens would have had a hard freeze and a bit of snow cover, but instead we've had rain, rain, and more rain. I've still got a few more jobs outdoors, but I'm catching up a bit. Once the cold and snows come, I'll quit worrying about it... what I don't see doesn't bother me!
Every year, I plan all these "catch-up" activities for the winter, but somehow, it just doesn't happen. By the time I've given up on the yard, Thanksgiving is on its way, then Christmas, then the new seedlings in the basement.... and it just keeps going from there.
I, too, have made a vow to "simplify" my life. I have too many half finished projects and unfulfilled promises, and I want to feel less stressed and more relaxed. It seems each time I have a hole in my life, I fill it up with something else! Here's hoping we all get some quiet time this winter.
Everything and everybody needs some time to rest and regroup. It does get pretty long tho in northern climates, and by early spring I am raring to go again. I'm really not much of a domestic, outdoor activities are much more interesting. My hubby says my definition of housework is anything I can see from the house.
weez, you just wrote my life's story!! all but the part about snow hiding all the outside, I don't get that luxury, it just gets too cold to do it, but I still have to see it.
Waaaaa. I still have a huge pile of mushroom compost that I need to put on my beds before winter hits. Then I can rest. Anybody want to volunteer to help me? Lani
Lani, I will help you spread your compost if you come help me rake leaves for 3-4 hours every day for the next 2 months!
I look forward to the down time too, but I wish it didn't have to be cold!
