Have you ever seen a sucker like this??

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I took my 3 boys Trick or Treating last night to the same subdivison that we always go to. I don't look in their buckets every time the go to a door and back I just wait until we get home to look the candy over. Well last night after we got home they dumped out their buckets and I looked thru them and found a few new kinds of candy that we had never seen before. 2 of my sons recieved a sucker with what looks to be spanish writing on it. Well that part didn't bother me. Then my son decided to open one of them and this is what he found!! A sucker in the shape of 2 red lips......with cut up glitter all over it!!!!! At first I thought well maybe it was just off the wrapper....then I noticed that the wrapper didn't look like that. I took the 2 suckers away from them and took a second look thru their candy.(didn't find anything weird the second time) But I simply can't figure out what this is?!! Have any of you ever seen anything like this before?? I noticed too that it has redd chili's in it!! So there for it is a HOT sucker!!
Would like to know what you think.

Molly, I have seen these (or similar things) for sale in gag stores, but it is hard to imagine anyone giving them out for Trick or Treat. The ones I have seen are about $1 each. And, yes, they are covered in hot chilis. Some gag, huh?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Hi MOLLYBEE, I had heard of this Mexican candy but had never seen it before. It is probably OK being wrapped. But, HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Yea but what about the glitter?? Don't you think that would be unsafe to eat?? I took a single piece of the glitter and put it in a little water thinking it would disolve...but it never did! I left it in there since last night and it still isn't disolved!

More than a trick! not much of a treat! I know I will be on the lookout for stuff like this next year for sure!!

Molly, I think I would have your boys retrace their trick or treat route with you and an officer. Glitter, even a small amount can create a lot of internal damage. Even if this was given as more of a trick, the outcome could be very bad for an unwary child or their parents. If nothing else this should be brought to the attention of the persons handing this stuff out, and to local authorities, so that it can be brought to the attention of parents in your community and others!!! MHO!!

That glitter is really weird. I think the label says "Hot Kiss" (Beso Ardiente) and "Enchilada-flavored" (Paleta Enchilada), and I can't read the rest of it so I don't know if any mention is made about ingredients. But surely if the glitter hasn't dissolved in water overnight, it can't be good for you! Maybe this is paranoid, but I think I'd take it somewhere like the Health Department, they might analyze it and issue warnings if it's dangerous. Just a thought.

Yuck-O! Can you post a picture of the ingredients list?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Eyes is right, I hadnt thought about the other kids that got the same suckers, and what harm it may do to them. I hope that you somehow can alert the other parents in the area.

I have not seen this type of sucker, and the fact that the glitter hasnt dissolved is bothersome too....

I hope you let us know what you find out.

Here's some which seem to be by the same company: http://www.mexicanspecialties.com

Here's the dulces Vero candy official website: http://www.dulcesvero.com.mx/empresa/conocenos.asp?Idioma=EN

Guess it's not the same as yours, but I'm getting closer!

Looks like there is edible glitter: http://209.242.196.12/highlights/08-02-contrends.html I wonder if it would take stomach acid to disolve it.

There's some awfully strange candy out there.

With a magnifying glass, the ingredient list is easily legible and seems benign: corn syrup, citric acid, salt, milled peppers, artificial flavors, artificial colors FD&C Red 40.

Yep was just fixing to add this pic.

It might not be toxic, but it sure looks unappetizing!

Try putting some of that glitter stuff in a tablespoon of Coke. ;)

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I'm not sure exactly what I should do here. I don't want to cause a stink over something like this and then later find out that the candy is just that...candy! Know what I mean? I don't want to cause a false alarm with my local police station. I'm thinking though that I will at least call and let them know that I am doing some searching on the web reguarding this candy. Then if things don't check out then I will have at least let them know before hand and they wont think I am a nut case. I really would like to find out exactly what the deal is with this though, for the safty of the other childern.
Thanks for all the help ya'll!

Wouldn't cha know it, we are out of Cokes LOL Wonder if Mountain Dew would work the same?? I do have that.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Molly - what's the brand of candy? It looks like there's some text in the upper left of the package's front. I can't quite make it out, though.

I'm not sure the police would take a phone call as seriously as they would actually seeing the candy -- I don't see how they could think you are a nut case, the candy really does look strange and the glitter doesn't dissolve. There may be other concerned moms who have also taken this candy to show the police.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

GW It says "Riko POP" I have searched for that name and everything that comes up is in a different lang!
Maybe you'll have luck with it.

I think I will take it to the police station in the a/m and just see what they think.

Here's a Google Translation of Beso Ardiente. Doesn't look very pure to me.

That sounds more like a description of a single thing entitled Beso Ardiente, like a play or a book, Eyes.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I did see that link when looking it up...but it really didn't seem to talk about candy of any sort.

I'm not giving up til I find something out about this, I was hoping that someone here would have remembered such a thing in the past. Maybe someone that grew up in Mexico or has Spanish relitives.

Back to the drawing board!

I wrote to a Spanish speaking DG member who's served as a missionary in other countries - hoping she'll be able to help.

Once again, I am validated in my ancient decision not to hand out treats. If I want to hand out anything, it is in the form of vouchers to use at either of several locally owned shops, with a month to redeem them. At the end of a month, I pay for the ones that were redeemed, retrieve the vouchers and use them to produce updated ones the next time I decide to treat. No one has to worry about content, no cops come to my door, as happened in the late 60s when a crazy man in Houston put needles and razor blades in apples.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I just emailed a Mexican friend to see if he knows anything about it. I'll post if he does know anything. Lani

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Please take anything questionable like this to your local police dept, They will not think you a kook but a concerned citizen. It maybe that the candy is just a hot sucker but when handed out to small children this can cause some bad reactions. Only a person who is being cruel would hand these out to youngsters. If they don't want to participate in the tradition of trick or treating they should shut off their porch light and not resort to meanness.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Molly, what happened?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

My missionary friend read the posts here and e-mailed me, saying she'd seen candy like this when in Mexico.

It's probably an okay, edible candy, but unfamiliar to people in this country -- and therefore NOT the best thing to hand out to trick-or-treaters. I still think it would be a good idea to alert the authorities that it's being distributed, so that at least they can be familiar with it.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I took the candy to my local police this a/m and told them my childern recieved it in Trick or Treating. They told me that there had been several others that brought the same exact candy to them in the past 2 days. They done their own research on it and found it to be safe and nontoxic. Seems a spanish family has just moved into the neighborhood and they had several types of candy that they had brought with them from their home in Mexico. What a relief!! I on the other hand chose not to let my childern have this candy and I think I will keep a closer eye on their candy in the future.
Thanks for all you help and encouragment!

Glad to hear that the candy is safe and that the police researched it on their own. It's encouraging to know that other parents were concerned enough to report it, too.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, wow - I hope that family doesn't become villianized. They just brought and distributed what was every day candy where they came from. That IS a great relief!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I know now that I will not wait about something like that if it ever happens again. I will make it my first stop! This has really taught me a lesson!!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I talked to my Mexican friend and he said that it was just as the police told you. Safe and non toxic. He said it is a popular candy in the area of Mexico that some cousins are from. But I would have thrown it out myself because of the glitter. I don't think I would want my children eating glitter!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I hope no one villanizes this family. Maybe a few stay at home moms can Create a Welcome wagon, and in it put some of their children's favorite candies and foods. I think this is a perfect friendship opportunity, and this will alert your new neigbors to what is popular here.......hmmmmmmn.
But it's always best to err on the side of caution.

Great idea, Eyes! Make the new family welcome in the neighborhood, and help prevent future troubles from unfamiliar customs! Give them a big welcome from me in cold Ohio. We have a lot of Central Americans who have settled in our area in the past few years, and they have brought some of the really good food stores and restaurants to us. Yummy. I just can't get any good chorizo still!
