DG page refresh

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

While watching the forums the only way I can get a new download update is to use the refresh button. Like the clock say's 4:04 and stays there until I close the link and start over again.

Do you have Internet Explorer? If so, change your options so it checks for a new version of the page each time you visit it.

1. TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS

2. Under "Temporary Internet Files" on the first tab,
you'll see a button that says SETTINGS.

3. Click that and under "Check for newer versions of stored pages" select "Every Visit to the Page"

4. Click OK, then OK again.

HTH :) Kimberley

Mine was set on automatic. Changed it to Every visit and same thing. The only way I can get the changes is to revisit the site every time I want to see if it changed.

You must be using a proxy at your ISP. I know how to work around that sillyness, and I have implemented it (on the front page only).

Go back to the front page, click on reload, and from that time on everytime you go it should automatically load up correctly for you.

Sorry but cant find front page and reload button. Do you mean Home page and refresh button??

I have the same thing happening -- I went to the Home Page (where the forums I'm watching are listed) and then clicked Reload, but still there are no automatic new uploads.

Am still having the same problem that Tarogers5 had/has. I am a Mac user with Netscape as the browser. I have logged out of Dave's, cleared my cache and restarted the computer and browser, but still it is necessary to click Reload every time I want to know if there have been new posts. As I understand it, my DG home page should update automatically (clock, threadwatcher, etc.). I read Dave's answer about the proxy business, so after I logged off, cleared the cache, and rebooted, I went to DG and hit Reload, but nothing has changed. Am I doing something wrong?

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Still doing the same for me too. I go back to the home page (welcome back tarogers) and hit refresh. brouse and then keep hitting refresh to see what is happening.

Yep, that's it, Tarogers. I sometimes get embarrassed about how many times I'm reloading the homepage, because I know Dave's server watches all that, but there's no other way for me to know there's been a new post.

whiterose found a shorter way of doing it. Whatever forum I am watching I right click and chose refresh. It will refresh that page so I can get the next coment right away.

Thank you, Tarogers5. I use a Mac, so right-clicking is not an option here -- but am very glad that you figured it out for the PC, that will save you a lot of time. Happy birthday!

whiterose... Go to Preferences under Netscape, then to Advanced. Under Advanced, look at the cache settings; at the bottom, there is a radio button to engage Netscape to compare a page to the page in the cache everytime that page is viewed. (What it does then is refresh the page if anything on the page has changed.) If you check this, I think you will find your problem solved.

Thanks, Darius! We just needed a Mac expert to come help us out. :)

Dave... ... sometimes I do manage to get lucky with advice, LOL!

Darius, thank you for helping me. I wish I could report success, but alas -- it didn't work. I logged off Dave's, then changed the cache preference to "every time," then logged off the Internet and restarted my iBook and logged back onto the Internet (and DG). When it became clear that the page was not changing, I clicked on "reload," thinking the proxy needed to be overridden, but still nothing changed. I repeated the procedure twice, to no avail.

I have pretty much concluded that there's some unalterable (by me) setting associated with the server that won't allow the page to change without reloading it -- is that possible?

Thank you very much for your consideration and making this helpful suggestion -- all logic says that it should have worked, and I appreciate it.

whiterose, I had the same problem with my old Mac. I got in the habit of hitting the skip to new button the top of a thread, and after reading the latest post in that thread, then hitting the back button once which took me back to the top of that thread, and then I hit the Home button in the righthand menu bar... which took me Home to a refreshed page.

Thank you, Darius. That is what I will do. It's not that big a deal, just a puzzlement...these puters!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I went to Google (of course!) and typed in

defragging mac http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=defragging+%2Bmac

Different results, also good, come up with the search

defrag mac http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=defrag+%2Bmac

The thing about Google is, you can almost always find an answer by typing in just two or three keywords about the problem. It's terrific!

MM... I clear the cache all the time, if I happen to think of it... although mine is set pretty high... 10 MB. The cache mostly contains images, like the DG logo, or all the images on your home page. Whatever you trash will get re-loaded the next time you visit those pages. I just don't think I need to keep all the images from all the catalogs I have shopped online!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Mine was on 10MB there too. I changed it to always from once persession. I was referrning to that other # above.
